A 101-year-old great-grand mother, identified as Esther Ogunmano, has been arrested by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in IIisan, Ogun State, for allegedly dealing in illicit drugs.
The centenarian was arrested on Saturday, August 15, with 90 grams of skunk, a strain of cannabis, packaged in small sachets for sale.
According to the NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, Ogunmano told investigators that she turned to selling the drug after her provisions shop was destroyed by fire.
She reportedly said one of her daughters, who lives in Lagos, supplies the cannabis to her every four days, after which she sold it in smaller quantities to customers.
Following the arrest, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (retd), directed that the 101-year-old suspect be granted bail and placed on counselling because of her advanced age, as the agency also arrested her daughter in connection with the alleged drug supply.
The NDLEA said the arrest formed part of its recent nationwide operations against illicit drug trafficking, with several other suspects arrested and significant quantities of narcotics recovered.
