A hunch from local police has paid off- with a million dollars allegedly uncovered in a ‘secret’ compartment of a vehicle’s fuel tank.
Police say it was the nervous behaviour of the driver in Broken Hill, which gave the game away.
It was early yesterday when local police pulled over a rental vehicle, a Toyota Landcruiser, and they smelled a rat.
On closer inspection the fuel tank had a false bottom. After decanting the fuel, it gave up its secret.
Hidden inside police found a steel box were $50s, $20s, and $100 notes sealed in bags – totalling $947,000.
James Whalley, the 52-year-old driver, faced Broken Hill Court today, charged with dealing with the proceeds of crime, police alleging his jittery behaviour was what sparked their search.
Police are now trying to work out where the money came from and where it was going.
