36-Year-Old Widow Defeats Plateau House of Assembly Speaker To Become First Female Member-Elect

36-Year-old Happiness Akawu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has defeated the Speaker of Plateau State House of Assembly, Yakubu Sanda of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Pengana Constituency to become the first female Member-Elect of the Assembly.

Happiness is the wife of the initial PDP candidate, the late Matthew Akawu, who died after the party’s primary and was replaced by his wife.

The INEC Returning Officer for the election, Professor Sati Chanle, who announced the results, said Akawu polled 9,926 to defeat Sanda who got 7,936 votes.

According to the results, Faisal Maitala of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, scored 6721 votes to finished third.
