Late military head of state, General Sani Abacha’s Chief Security Officer, Hamza Al-Mustapha, at the weekend in Enugu paid a courtesy call to the Deputy President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Hon. Ogochukwu Onyema, during which he preached peace between indigenes and Fulani herdsmen.
Al-Mustapha was in Enugu as the Guest Lecturer to mark the Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
He was accompanied on the visit by several leaders of Hausa and Fulani communities in the state, and he stressed the need for peace and unity to among all tribes in the country.
He explained that the reason for his visit to Onyema was to plead for renewed peaceful co-existence among the Hausa /Fulani herdsmen in the state with their Igbo brothers.
He also tendered apology for the mistakes of the past that were committed by the herdsmen even as he commended the leadership of the present administration of Ohaneze Ndigbo, led by Prof. Igariwey and Onyema for the roles they are playing in ensuring a harmonious between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the state.
Onyema, who was elated by the visit, praised Mustapha for the various roles he is playing in promoting peace and unity in the country.
He affirmed that Ndigbo are very peace loving and hospitable tribe, and wished that the disdainful destruction of farm crops of the rural indigent farmers by wandering Fulani herdsmen with their cattle,which has been the source of conflicts, will not continue.
The topic of the lecture which Dr Mustapha had delivered the previous day at NUJ Press Center, Enugu, was ‘The Menace of Fulani Herdsmen, The Way Forward’.
