Facebook has once again taken the number one spot on the top smartphone applications list in the United States, Nielsen reported.
The data and information company stated that the application gained more than 146 million unique users this year, indicating 14 percent growth compared to last year. Facebook also managed to secure second rank on the list with its Messenger app, which gained more than 129 million average unique users.
Instagram, acquired by Facebook in 2012, landed eighth on the list. It grew by 36 percent from 2015, making it second highest in year-over-year growth (36 percent).
Meanwhile, Google dominated the list. YouTube, Google Maps, Google Search, Google Play and Gmail are ranked in a row from third to seventh place.
Following in the ninth and tenth places are Apple Music and Amazon App. Nielsen recorded mobile shopping application Amazon App as the app with the highest year-over-year user growth (43 percent).
In addition to naming the year’s top applications, Nielsen also reported an increase in smartphone users. It stated that 88 percent of mobile subscribers are now smartphone users, mirroring a 2 percent increase from the data recorded at the beginning of the year. Among the recorded smartphones are Android (53 percent), iOS (45 percent), Windows (2 percent) and Blackberry (1 percent).
The list was created based on data Nielsen gathered from January to October 2016. Meanwhile, the year-over-year growth record was made by comparing the data gained in October 2015 and October 2016. (mas/asw)
