Women town planners meet Environment Commissioner, seek partnership for clean A’Ibom

Women Town Planners in Nigeria -AWTPN, Uyo Chapter paid a courtesy visit on Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Environment and Solid Minerals, Mr. Charles Udoh to partner the Ministry to secure a well planned environment for the citizens

The event which took place on Tuesday August 16, 2022, in conference room of the ministry of Environment, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat in Uyo, was attended by the principal officers in the ministry.

The Chairperson of the organization Tpl. Dr. Jenny Ntamark, expressed the hope that the challenges arising from environmental issues in the state would be tackled headlong through strategic planning and professional collaboration with the certified town planners in the state for a speedy result.

In the address presented on behalf of the body, the Chairperson, Tpl. Dr. Jenny Ntamark she appreciated the Commissioner for Environment and his team of professionals in the Ministry for the good work they are doing for the State.

The leaders of the association expressed the hope that the challenges arising from environmental issues in the State will be tackled headlong through strategic planning and professional collaboration with the certified town planners in the State for a speedy results.

The association made case on the need for the establishment of workable framework by relevant agencies for inclusive participation of women town planners for sustainable human settlement and development in the State

Dr. Ntamark used the occasion to inform the commissioner of the International Plastic Bag Free Day which she said was observed as a yearly event across the world in an effort to raise awareness on the pressing issue of plastic pollution on the planet urging the ministry to get involved in observing the world event.

The association however reminded the environment commissioner of the Urban and Regional Planning Act which have been passed into law by the 7th & 8th Assembly now pending on the desk of the State Governor for assent and urged him to intervene by appealing to the State Executive, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel to expedite action on the Act to make it a working document for the state.

Responding, the Hon. Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Charles Udo thanked the women town planners for their initiatives in crusading for safe urban and rural environment in the state.

Mr. Udo welcomed the women ideas and applauded their role in national devepment, describing them as best hands in environmental planning, protection and management.

He noted that, without women in various homes, the environment would be better imagined. He likened their role in their various homes and that of the Ministry of environment saying both have a lot in common. He urged them to maintain the momentum in their guest to create awareness for the pending global environmental hazards arising from misnagement of waste and climate change, to save humanity from environmental catastrophe.

He however regreted his inabilty to meet some of the requests made by the women town planners but promised to liaise with relevant authorities to chart the way forward.

Among those in the team were the Secrretary of the association, Tpl.Elizabeth Ufot-Akpabio, Tpl. Enobong Isaiah Udo, Tpl. Victoria Otobong, Atim onwiunu-Okor, Eno Mfin and others.
