The Federal House of Representatives has proposed a bill to amend the Federal Medical Center Act and establish a new federal medical center in Orile, Lagos.
The bill, championed by Hon. Lanre Okunola, who represents the Surulere Federal Constituency, seeks to ensure adequate medical facilities are accessible to all citizens.
During the session today, Hon. Okunola emphasized the importance of the initiative, describing it as a “critical lifeline” to address the healthcare gap within his constituency.
“Our citizens deserve access to quality healthcare without having to travel long distances.“ he stated.
The bill received further support from Hon. Chike Okafor, who seconded the motion for it to be read a second time.
The endorsement marks a promising step in moving the proposal forward, signaling the House’s commitment to addressing healthcare disparities and improving medical infrastructure nationwide.
The establishment of a federal medical center in Orile could significantly alleviate the strain on existing health facilities in Lagos, enhancing access to healthcare for residents in Surulere and surrounding areas.
According to Hon. Okunola, if passed, the proposed amendment to the Federal Medical Center Act will reinforce the government’s efforts to ensure equitable healthcare services across the country.
