An High Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Wednesday January 22, 2025, convicted a 22-year-old man, Jami’u Malomo, to death by hanging after he was found guilty of stabbing a commercial sex worker to death.
While narrating the circumstances that led to the crime, the prosecuting counsel, A. M Adebayo who is the Deputy Director Public Prosecution, said the convict committed the offences on July 18, 2021 at about 9:30pm at Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Adebayo explained that Malomo had picked the deceased, Assist Akande who was a commercial sex worker, from a bar to the Panseke area to his house for “sexual pleasure”.
“After having canal knowledge of the deceased, she demanded for N10,000 which was their agreement but Malomo refused to give her the complete money saying he had N8,000”, Adebayo told the Court.
“The statement led to an argument between him and the deceased which made the convict brought out knife from his pocket and stabbed her on the neck.
“The stab resulted to the instant death of the deceased”, the prosecutor said; adding that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, laws of Ogun 2006.
While delivering judgement, Justice O. Ogunfowora held that the Prosecutor proved his case beyond reasonable doubt that Malomo was guilty of the offences charged.
The Judge held that the evidence presented by the Prosecutor was not controverted, hence, the conviction and sentencing to death by hanging.
“You are hereby guilty of killing Assist Akande as preferred against you. You will be hanged to death until you are dead. May God have mercy on you” the Judge said, while disregarding Malomo’s not guilty to the one-count charge of murder.
