The President of Amaraku Concerned Citizens (ACC), Henry Chinaemerem Nwaiwu, has raised alarm over the ongoing construction of the Orie Amaraku Market.
Speaking to journalists in Amaraku, Nwaiwu decried the alleged use of substandard building materials by the developers handling the project and the blatant deviation from the approved master plan and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) guiding the market’s construction.
In calling on the Imo State Government to intervene urgently, he described the situation as “a looming disaster.”
Describing the existing structure as “a time bomb,” Nwaiwu warned that continued negligence could lead to tragic loss of lives and property if immediate steps are not taken.
He accused certain local leaders of colluding with developers to undermine the interest of the people for selfish gain.
According to Nwaiwu, the original MOU and master plan detailed specific requirements, including the quality of building materials, design layout, and provision of essential amenities such as a fire service center, toilets, pedestrian walkways, a NURTW office, and a borehole.
He further lamented that the developers have strayed significantly from these provisions, constituting a breach of the agreement and a betrayal of public trust.
“The actions of these developers and their enablers are not just irresponsible but a direct exploitation of the Amaraku people.
“We cannot afford to look away while lives are put at risk for profit.” He said.
Nwaiwu concluded by issuing a passionate appeal to the Imo State Government, urging swift intervention to halt the ongoing violations and enforce compliance with the agreed standards before the situation spirals out of control.
