President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday in Abuja.
The president received Egbetokun’s resignation letter citing pressing family considerations.
Tinubu expressed appreciation for his decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.
He acknowledged Egbetokun’s dedication, professionalism and commitment to strengthening internal security during his tenure.
Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was serving a four-year term scheduled to conclude in June 2027 under the amended Police Act.
In view of prevailing security challenges, the President approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as the acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
Tinubu said Disu’s experience and operational depth would provide steady leadership for the force at a critical time.
In compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP.
His name will subsequently be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security and institutional capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.
