Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has made history as the first African and non-European referee to officiate the UEFA Super Cup.

The 34-year-old took charge of the 2026 UEFA Super Cup between UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and UEFA Europa League winners Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday. Paris Saint-Germain won the encounter 2–1.

Artan’s appointment was particularly significant given that he had been selected by FIFA to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup but was unable to participate after being denied entry into the United States.

US authorities cited immigration and security-vetting concerns when Artan was stopped at Miami International Airport in June. 

FIFA subsequently confirmed that he would be unable to officiate at the tournament. 

Meanwhile, Artan denied allegations of any links to terrorism. 

UEFA, however, selected Artan for its prestigious season-opening fixture following discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF). 

The appointment was made under a cooperation agreement between UEFA and CAF with the aim of promoting collaboration, including in refereeing. 

Artan has established himself as one of Africa’s leading referees. 

He has been on the FIFA international referees list since 2018, officiated at the Africa Cup of Nations and the CAF Champions League, and was named CAF Men’s Referee of the Year in 2025.

The Confederation of African Football Disciplinary Board has imposed a series of sanctions on the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football, the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football, as well as several players and officials, following incidents during the 2025 African Cup of Nations final.

In a statement posted on its website on Wednesday night, CAF said the sanctions were handed down for violations of the CAF Disciplinary Code, including breaches of the principles of fair play, loyalty and integrity, during and after the final match.

As part of the decisions against Senegal, CAF suspended the head coach of the Senegalese national team, Pape Bouna Thiaw, for five official CAF matches for his “unsporting conduct” and “for bringing the game into disrepute.”

“Mr Pape Bouna Thiaw was also fined USD 100,000,” the statement read.

CAF also decided to “suspend the Senegalese national team player, Mr Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye for two (2) official CAF matches, for his unsporting behaviour towards the referee.

“To suspend Senegalese national team player, Mr Ismaila Sarr for two (2) official CAF matches for his unsporting behaviour towards the referee.

“To fine the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), USD 300,000 for the improper conduct of its supporters, which brought the game into disrepute in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play and integrity.

“To fine the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), USD 300,000 for the unsporting conduct of their players and technical staff in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play, loyalty and integrity. The unsporting conduct of their players and the technical staff also brought the game into disrepute.

“To fine the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), USD 15,000 for the misconduct of its national team, due to five (5) of its players having received cautions.”

With regard to Morocco, CAF suspended national team defender, Achraf Hakimi, for two official CAF matches, with one of the matches suspended for one year from the date of the decision, for unsporting behaviour.

CAF also imposed a fine of 100,000 dollars on the Moroccan federation for the improper conduct of its players and technical staff, who invaded the VAR review area and obstructed the referee’s work.

An additional fine of 15,000 dollars was issued for the use of lasers by Moroccan supporters during the match.

The final, held at the Stade Mohammed V in Rabat on January 18, 2026, descended into disarray in the dying moments of regular time.

With the score tied at 0-0, Senegal had a goal disallowed for offside, followed shortly by a VAR review that granted host Morocco a penalty in the eighth minute of added time.

Unsatisfied, Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw, led his players off the pitch in protest, prompting wild scenes, and security had to intervene.

After a delay, the Senegalese team was persuaded to return. Morocco’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, sending the game into extra time.

Midfielder Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal in the fourth minute of the first half of extra time to secure Senegal’s AFCON title.

Both CAF and FIFA president Gianni Infantino at the time condemned the conduct.

Meanwhile, CAF also ruled on a protest lodged by the FRMF concerning alleged violations of Articles 82 and 84 of the Africa Cup of Nations regulations by the FSF.

“The CAF Disciplinary Board rejected the protest lodged by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football regarding alleged violations by the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football of Articles 82 and 84 of the Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations, relating to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final,” the statement added.

The Confederation of African Football has appointed an all-Cameroonian team of match officials for Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 Round of 16 tie against Mozambique.

9news Nigeria reports that the knockout encounter between the Super Eagles and the Mambas will be played on Monday at the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco.

Centre referee Abdou Abdel Mefire, 29, will take charge of the match, making him the youngest referee at the ongoing tournament.

In spite of  his age, Mefire has displayed maturity and composure on the continental stage.

He recently officiated the high-intensity group-stage clash between hosts Morocco and Mali.

His handling of key incidents in that match, including decisions reviewed through VAR, earned praise for calmness and accuracy.

Elvis Guy Noupue will serve as first assistant referee for the encounter.

Noupue is an experienced official who has handled matches at the FIFA World Cup and remains one of Cameroon’s most trusted referees.

The second assistant referee is Carine Atezambong Fomo, a respected female official with vast experience in top-level CAF competitions.

Fomo has officiated major continental fixtures, including high-profile finals, and is widely regarded for consistency and professionalism.

With a blend of youthful energy and seasoned expertise, the Cameroonian officiating team is expected to ensure fairness and discipline.

Egypt has become the first country to qualify for the last 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

This follows their narrow 1-0 win over South Africa in a Group A fixture on Friday evening.

The Pharoahs had opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe.

Against the Bafana Bafana, Egypt scored the only goal of the encounter in the first half, after Mohamed Salah converted from the penalty spot.

And although they finished the half with 10 men after Mohamed Hany was shown a red card, the North Africans held on for all three points.

They will now face Angola in their last group fixture, while South Africa take on Zimbabwe.

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has emerged as the joint-leading scorer at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco after a lively opening round of group matches that wrapped up on Wednesday.

Mahrez struck twice in Algeria’s convincing 3-0 victory over Sudan. The winger now shares top spot on the AFCON 2025 scorers’ chart with Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson and Tunisia’s attacking standout Elias Achouri.

Jackson also grabbed a brace as Senegal swept aside Botswana on Tuesday, while Achouri matched that feat in Tunisia’s win over Uganda on the same day.

Behind the leading trio, several familiar names have already opened their accounts, including Nigeria duo Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman, Egypt talisman Mohamed Salah, South Africa’s Lyle Foster, Ivory Coast winger Amad Diallo and Equatorial Guinea’s Marvin Anieboh.

Wednesday’s results added further intrigue across the groups. Defending champions Ivory Coast edged Mozambique 1-0 in Group F, with Amad Diallo providing the decisive moment.

Cameroon also claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Gabon in the same group, Etta Eyong finding the net before the break.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has named two uncapped youngsters in centre-back Tylon Smith and winger Shandre Campbell in his final 25-player squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Broos named a 25-man squad on Monday, the first of the 24 teams heading to Morocco to do so, and while the core is his tried and trusted, he has brought in the two 20-year-olds, which many will see as an exciting development.

“We have to look to the future too, and have players who will train with us and get a feel of the national team,” Broos said in announcing his squad. “This squad will not change much for the World Cup as well, maybe a few players, so it is important to look to that too.”

Smith is at English Championship side Queens Park Rangers, while Shandre Campbell plays for Belgian side Club Brugge and has featured in the UEFA Champions League for them this season.

There is also a return for Saudi-based right winger Elias Mokwana, and Burnley’s Lyle Foster gets the nod too.

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Iqraam Rayners is among three players on stand-by, along with centre-back Thabo Moloisane (Stellenbosch FC) and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala.

Sundowns playmaker Themba Zwane did not make it having only just returned from injury, while Orlando Pirates’ Patrick Maswanganyi was not selected.

There are time only five players from Sundowns in the main squad, after Broos has relied heavily on them in qualifying for this tournament and the World Cup.

Instead, there are nine players from Pirates, with the team to be fully assembled on either Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

Broos revealed he is hoping to play a friendly against an as yet unnamed opponent on either December 16 or 17.

South Africa play Egypt, Zimbabwe and Angola in Group B in Morocco, starting against the latter on December 22.

Erling Haaland was back on the scoresheet with two goals to help Manchester City return to winning ways in the Premier League and leapfrog Bournemouth into second place.

Pep Guardiola’s side had suffered their first defeat in 10 games at Aston Villa last Sunday, with Haaland not finding the net for only the second time this season.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has raised the bar for national recognition of athletes by rewarding the Super Falcons with a combination of national honours, luxury housing, and substantial cash awards.

On Sunday, July 28, 2025, the President hosted the reigning African champions at the State House in Abuja, where he announced that each member of the 24-player squad, along with their technical crew, would receive the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), a three-bedroom flat, and a cash reward of $100,000 (in Naira equivalent).

This is a feat never seen in the history of women’s football in the country.

For decades, Nigeria’s female footballers, despite their unmatched dominance on the African continent have been largely overlooked when it came to national reward systems. 

In previous administrations, players were either ignored, inadequately compensated, or in some cases, forced to protest for their entitlements.

In 2016, for instance, the Super Falcons staged a public demonstration in Abuja after winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON), over unpaid bonuses and allowances. 

The then administration reluctantly awarded them ₦1 million each (about $2,700 at the time). 

No national honours were given. No housing was promised.

Similarly, under the Jonathan administration, the Falcons’ 2014 AWCON victory fetched each player ₦1 million, approximately $6,000 at the time without any formal recognition or ceremony at the Presidential Villa. 

Prior to that, under Obasanjo and Yar’Adua, rewards for the team were sporadic, modest, and often overshadowed by more generous packages given to their male counterparts.

However, Tinubu’s administration has now created what many are calling a “corrective legacy”, offering the Super Falcons not only financial appreciation but symbolic respect through national honours and housing.

The players themselves were visibly emotional during the Presidential reception, with some seen shedding tears of joy as they were called forward to receive their awards. 

By conferring OON titles; a rank usually reserved for top government officials and business moguls, President Tinubu has elevated the status of the Super Falcons beyond the realm of sport and into national leadership recognition.

The 2025 reward to the Super Falcons is not just better than previous efforts, it is a new gold standard.

The Confederation of  African Football (CAF) has increased the prize money of the winner of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024 by 100% and the total prize money  by 45%.

According to CAF President, Patrice Motsepe he said the winner of this edition will get one million dollars  as against 500,000 in 2022 with the total prize money increased to over 3.4 million  dollars against   2.4 million dollars.

“The confederation is continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of Women’s Football in Africa.

“The 100 per cent increase in the prize money of the winner of the tournament and the 45 per cent total increase should contribute to the increase of the salaries of women football players, coaches and employees.

“The quality and standard of women’s football in Africa is consistently improving and is world class.

“We are excited about the substantial increase in the number of fans, broadcasting viewers and sponsors in this tournament,” Motsepe said.

The participating National Teams will receive:

• Winner: USD 1 000 000
• Runner up: USD 500 000
• Third place: USD 350 000
• Fourth place: USD 300 000
• Quarter-finalists (4 Teams): USD 200 000 for each Team
• 3^rd of the group: USD 150 000
• 4^th of the group (3 Teams): USD 125 000 for each Team

TOTAL PRIZE MONEY: USD 3 475,000.

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has announced Egypt as the host of the 2025 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Cote d’Ivoire was billed to host the age-grade competition from April 26 to May 18, but the country pulled out precisely a month before the event.

According to a CAF statement, the West African country pulled out of hosting the competition due to unforeseen circumstances.

The statement reads, “The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) today awarded the Egyptian Football Association (“EFA”) and Egyptian Government the rights to host the TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025.

“This is subsequent to CAF having been informed by the Fédération Ivoirienne de Football (“FIF”) and the Government of Côte d’Ivoire that due to unforeseen circumstances, they are unable to host the TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025. “

Egypt hosted the previous edition of the competition and the country will take up the responsibility again, and the 2025 U-20 AFCON has been rescheduled to start on April 27.

The Flying Eagles are drawn in Group B of the competition against the new hosts, Morocco and South Africa, as the top two teams from each group will automatically qualify for the knockout.

Meanwhile, the best two third-placed teams will also get quarter-final slots. The semi-finalists will qualify automatically for the 2025 U-20 World Cup in Chile.

Chairman of the International Sports Academy, Segun Odegbami, has praised alumnus Tolu Arokodare following his recent call-up to the Super Eagles squad.

Odegbami, a former Green Eagles captain and 1980 African Nations Cup winner, gave the commendation during an interview with reporters.

9News Nigeria reports that 24-year-old Arokodare trained at the International Sports Academy, Wasinmi, Ogun, before excelling at Belgian top-flight club, Genk FC.

Before his national team invitation by coach Eric Chelle, Arokodare scored 17 goals and provided five assists in 30 matches for Genk during the 2024/2025 season.

Arokodare made his Nigeria debut in the 75th minute against Rwanda in Kigali, where the Eagles won 2-0 in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Odegbami, who scored 23 goals in 47 appearances for Nigeria (1976–1981), lauded Arokodare’s inclusion, tipping him for success with the Super Eagles.

South African Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected unopposed as the President of Confederation of African Football, CAF.

The development means that he would serve a second four-year term as CAF boss.

He secured a second term during CAF’s extraordinary general assembly held in Cairo on Wednesday, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino in attendance.

Motsepe was elected by acclamation in Morocco four years ago, succeeding Malagasy Ahmad Ahmad, who had been suspended by FIFA over financial misconduct.

CAF secretary general Veron Mosengo-Omba is among those who have credited Motsepe with improving the finances and governance of the organisation.

“Patrice was a gift for African football. In 2021 CAF was a toxic body. He brought good governance to all levels of the organisation,” Mosengo-Omba said ahead of the meeting.

Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure on Sunday in Lafia drew 1-1 with hosts Nasarawa United FC in the ongoing 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.

The Match Day 28 fixture played behind closed doors at the Township Stadium saw both teams creating numerous goal scoring opportunities but ultimately settling for a share of the points.

Idris Ajiya of Nasarawa United scored just five minutes into the game, but Ahmadu Liman of Sunshine Stars equalised in the 35th minute.

Ugandan police said they were investigating the death of a Nigerian footballer, Abubakar Lawal, who fell from a shopping mall balcony in Kampala.

The 29-year-old striker played for local premiership club Vipers, as local reports revealed that he fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade.

The Police department noted that he visited a Tanzanian friend staying in one of the residential apartments that form part of the mall.

Meanwhile, Vipers Sports Club revealed in a statement saddened over the sudden and passing of Lawal.

The Statement said; “We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” it added.

Lawal had been the team’s striker since joining the club in July 2022 after two years with AS Kigali in Rwanda.

Kano Pillars Football Club secured a 2-1 victory over Elkanemi Warriors of Maiduguri in the ongoing Nigerian Professional Football League, NPFL.

The match which took place at the Sani Abacha Stadium, attracting a large crowd of spectators.

Pillars’ captain, Rabiu Ali, put his team ahead in the 62nd minute with a penalty, with Elkanemi responding just three minutes later, also equalising with their a penalty in the 65th minute.

“With movements in the mid-season transfer window here and there, we have to register new players to see out the remainder of the 2024/2025 season with short and long-term contracts of players.

“We registered 12 new players to take part in the league for the remainder of the season. “Seven, however, are newly signed players, while five are from the club’s academy,” he said.

English Premier League giants Chelsea are reportedly in pole position to secure the services of Victor Osimhen when his loan spell at Galatasaray concludes at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old Nigerian forward joined the Turkish club on loan from Napoli in September following a fallout with the Italian side. 

Since his arrival, Osimhen has become a fan favorite, thanks to his stellar performances in the Turkish Süper Lig.

Despite Galatasaray’s desire to make his move permanent, financial constraints seem to be an insurmountable obstacle. 

Napoli’s asking price, which ranges between €60 million and €70 million, is beyond Galatasaray’s reach. 

Following he issue is Osimhen’s €10 million annual salary, which the Turkish club has been covering during his loan.

Adding to the complexity of the situation is a €120 million release clause in Osimhen’s contract with Napoli. 

This clause could allow the striker to make an early exit from Galatasaray as soon as January, potentially opening the door for other suitors.

The Nigerian Super Eagles, en route to an AFCON 2025 qualifier, found themselves stranded at Al Abraq Airport in Libya for over 13 hours after their flight was unexpectedly diverted.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Gbenga Elegbeleye, has said that the newly introduced Under 17 Youth League would help the country to select and prepare players for international tournaments.

Elegbeleye said this on Saturday while speaking to newsmen in Benin City, the Edo State capital, during the final of the maiden edition of the youth league.

According to Elegbeleye, who is the 2nd Vice-Chairman of the NFF, the league will only focus on young players.

Elegbeleye regretted the failure of the country to qualify for the last U-17 World Cup, saying that it was due to poor planning.

He expressed the hope that the introduction of the youth league would take care of the lapses that hindered the country from picking the ticket for the last cadet World Cup.

“Where we have an NPFL club, the youth team (U-17) will be like a feeder team to the various clubs.

“When you have the U-15 players, they cannot graduate immediately and be playing for the premier league, so we need them to go through the U-17.

“Plateau United FC is already benefiting. I can spot three of the boys coming into the senior team from the U-17 team; that is the spirit.

“When we play Under 15 and Under 17 league every season, it will enable us to have a pool of footballers that NFF can select from.”

A member of the competitions committee told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity, that there was “an agreement in principle between CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation for the AFCON to be held during the summer, more precisely in July and August” 2025.

Tinubu therefore acknowledged the hurdles they consistently surpassed with steadily improving performance as they pulled through to the finals.

The House of Representatives on Monday congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria for clinching the silver prize at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the fifth time.

The spokesman for the house, Rep. Akin Rotimi in a statement on Monday said that the green chambers celebrate the entire players and coaching crew for their spirited display in Cote d’Ivoire.

He said that the lawmakers are particularly delighted with the performance of the team captain William Ekong for emerging ‘Man of the Competition’.

Rotimi said that the achievement of the Super Eagles would inspire not just the multitude of sports talents across the country, but countrymen and women in other spheres of influence to do more for their fatherland.

He said that the country has been more united by their sterling performance at the tournament, commending the Super Eagles for giving a good account of themselves during the games.

Rotimi said; “The Super Eagles, based on their performance at the tournament, deserved victory but narrowly lost the AFCON trophy. 

“Nevertheless, they have proven that Nigeria remains the giant of Africa in sport and other endeavours.

According to the Igbo native politician, the decision came following a helicopter mishap in California, USA on Friday, that claimed the lives of two Nigerian bankers.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris on Suday said the ministry through the National Orientation Agency (NOA) commenced mobilisation of Nigerians to galvanize support for the Super Eagles.

President Bola Tinubu is set to attend the final match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) between Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire.

The President of the Confederation of African Football Federations, Patrice Motsepe, confirmed Tinubu’s plan to be present during a press conference in Abidjan.

Motsepe expressed his optimism for the final and mentioned that he would discuss the possibility of Nigeria hosting the World Cup again with President Tinubu. Vice President Kashim Shettima also attended the semi-finals, where Nigeria emerged victorious. The AFCON 2023 final will take place on Sunday at 9 pm Nigerian time, and the event may spark discussions about Nigeria’s potential World Cup bid.

South Africa’s head coach Hugo Broos revealed that his side played better against Nigeria in Wednesday’s semi-final encounter which they lost 2-4 on penalty kicks.

Reacting to the outcome of the match, Broos explained that his side played much better and deserved to move on to the final of the 2023 AFCON. 

“Football can be hard sometimes, when you look at the performance of my team today (Wednesday), and then there were the penalty kicks. Then you lose the penalty shootout  and you are not in the finals.

“It’s  hard to accept that, because we played a very good game today. I think we were the best team in the first half, we got the best chances, Nigeria didn’t have any chance.

“In the second half, they had few chances which resulted in a goal and we changed something tactically, and we came back,” he said.

He insisted that his team created more chances, adding that if they had scored, they would have been in the final and not Nigeria.

Broos therefore hailed the South African side, noting that the tournament has been a great one for them.

“It’s a big disappointment for everyone, and we believe we played a very good game, not just today but throughout the tournament.

“I’m proud of my players. The disappointment is in not being in the final, but the pride is in having performed well,” he said.

The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima said the Federal Government will reward the Super Eagles for their commitment and dedication.

On Wednesday the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final encounter between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana of South Africa would be decided.

To that effect, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), on Tuesday appointed Egyptian, Amin Omar as referee for the semi-final encounter.

This was revealed by the Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ademola Olajire, who stated this in Abuja.

He said Omar’s compatriots; Mahmoud Abouelregal and Ahmed Ibrahim would play the roles of assistant referee 1, and assistant referee 2, while Sudanese Mahmood Ismail will serve as fourth official

Olajire said that Attia Amsaaed from Libya will be the reserve assistant referee, with Yacoub  Elmi from Djibouti as commissioner and Aboubacar Doumbouya from Guinea as referee assessor.

“Three-time champions Nigeria and 1996 champions South Africa face off in their second-ever Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash at the Stade de la Paix.

“Their only previous meeting at the same stage, at the National Stadium in Lagos when Nigeria co-hosted the 2000 finals with Ghana, ended 2-0 in favour of Nigeria.

“Wednesday’s clash is being billed as the more potentially-explosive of the two semi-finals, hosts Cote d’Ivoire will be up against Democratic Republic of Congo, given the pedigree, rivalry and ambition of the two teams,“he said.

South Africa only defeated Nigeria twice in 14 previous meetings at full senior level, though Nigeria edged an African Nations Championship clash by beating the hosts 3-1 in Cape Town in 2014.

Morocco has been selected by FIFA to host the 2023 Club World Cup in February, while an expanded 32-team edition is set to launch in 2025.FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, made the announcement on Friday.

An alleged off-field tactics by Ghana officials to destabilise the Super Eagles ahead of their crucial first leg final qualifier for the Qatar 2022 World Cup in Kumasi has been leaked, 9news Nigeria gathered.

Ghana host the first leg of the qualifiers at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi on Friday, with the reverse fixture in Abuja four days later.

Our correspondent learnt that the Ghanaians were afraid that they might not stand a chance against the star-studded Nigerian side and have instead deployed other means to see how they could win the first leg by a high score line, to turn the return leg in Abuja to a mere formality.

Our source, who is close to the Ghanaian football authorities, said Black Stars officials have been working on the plan, which includes rejecting the COVID-19 certificates of the biggest stars of the Nigerian team and run their own tests, which according to him, they plan to use it to psychologically demoralise the Nigerians.

“I was told two weeks ago of a plot by the Ghanaians to make sure they defeat Nigeria in the first leg by a wide margin. My Ghanaian contact told me to tell the NFF to instruct their team that they shouldn’t eat anything at the hotel, including drinking and bathing water.”

On the COVID-19 issue, our source added, “This afternoon, they called me again. Now, I learnt they’ve hatched another plot to destabilise or disqualify the Eagles star players. What they want to do is that they will claim that the (COVID-19) certificates presented by our key players are not tenable, that they will have to conduct their own tests. Even if they later clear the players, the players would have been discouraged, because it would come late.”

Meanwhile, the Eagles have adjusted their travel plans and will not jet out to Kumasi on Thursday (today). They were earlier scheduled to fly out from Abuja on Wednesday.

It was also learnt that officials of the three-time African champions have made new arrangement for their accommodation in the neighbouring West African country, after they were earlier scheduled to lodge at the 3-Star Noda Hotel.

The squad will now lodge at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi, the NFF made the hotel change known in a statement on Wednesday.

Also, President, Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, says the federation is doing everything legal and acceptable for Nigeria to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

Pinnick made this known during a meeting with some members of the NFF Executive Committee at the federation’s secretariat on Wednesday.

“Of course, we are not the ones going into the field,” Pinnick said.

“But the arrangements we put in place will, to a large extent, determine the spirit with which the players will enter the pitch. All our arrangements must be flawless and without sloppiness. It is a FIFA World Cup ticket at stake, so we must give it our all.

“Whatever efforts we have been making to ensure seamless movement to and fro, as well as accommodation of our contingent at major matches, must be doubled for the match in Kumasi.

“Nigerians don’t want to hear any story; they only want to see the World Cup ticket.”

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said Augustine Eguavoen can keep the national team job on a permanent basis if he wants.

The 56-year-old stepped in on an interim basis after Gernot Rohr was sacked in December.

Eguavoen has so far impressed at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, with the Super Eagles winning all their Group D fixtures.

However, he was supposed to hand over to Jose Peseiro after the tournament.

But ESPN reports that the NFF is having second thoughts about that.

“We will have to leave him there, unless he doesn’t want the job,” an NFF source said.

Eguavoen is currently the NFF Technical Director, but the football house would allow him handle both roles.

“What we are even thinking of right now is to give Eguavoen the two jobs. The national team plays about 10 matches a year, so during those times when they are not playing, he can carry on with his other responsibilities.

“Coaching is very touch and go. Right now, he has a stable job being Technical Director where he gets paid by FIFA. To leave that for being a coach where things can change any moment and he can get fired would be very risky.

“That is why we want him to keep the two positions. So, whatever happens, he has shown that he can excel in both and if anything happens with the coaching, he can go back to just being technical director,” the official added.

Former Feyenoord and Wrexham star Christian Gyan has died of cancer at the age of just 43.

Gyan was born in Ghana but moved to Netherlands in the late 1990s to sign for Feyenoord, where he made 93 appearances.

A touch-tackling defender, Gyan helped the club win the Eredivisie in 1999 and the UEFA Cup in 2002.

He remained with Feyenoord until 2008 when he signed for Finnish side TPS.

In January 2009 he joined National League side Wrexham but only made two appearances before being released.

He later had spells with RoPS and Dutch amateur side RKSV Leonidas before hanging up his boots.

Gyan had been battling illness in the period leading up to his death and earlier this month posted on Facebook about his situation.

Former Feyenoord striker Bonaventure Kalou was among those to pay tribute to his former team-mate and friend.

Napoli is set to stop striker, Victor Osimhen from representing Nigeria at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cameroon to allow his collar bone injury to heal properly.

The 2021 AFCON begins on January 9 and ends on February 6, 2022.

According to Football Italia, Osimhen spent the Christmas break in Nigeria, but he’s expected to return to Naples on Friday for a medical check after a cheekbone surgery he underwent at the end of November.

The report added that the 23-year-old may not be allowed to play against Juventus on January 6 and even in the AFCON, adding that “it will be Nigeria’s responsibility to consider the player available for the tournament in Cameroon.”

Osimhen’s hope of playing in Nigeria’s opening AFCON clash against Egypt on January 11 is hanging in the balance as his club’s doctor has said he is not yet fit for action.

Napoli ruled Osimhen out of action for three months, but the former Lille star said last week that he would be available to play for Nigeria at AFCON.

Nigeria’s training retreat starts today and it is still unclear whether or not Osimhen will join his Super Eagles’ teammates for the first training session before the tournament starts.

Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, has confirmed he will be available to play at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Osimhen’s participation was in doubt, after he suffered a facial injury in their Serie A clash against Inter Milan last November.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Tuesday released the list of 63 match officials who will officiate at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) slated for Cameroon.

Reports state that the list consists of 24 referees, 31 assistant referees and eight video assistant referees (VARs) from 36 countries.

Only one of the listed officials was however from Nigeria, Samuel Pwadutakam, and he will work as an assistant referee.

Reports state that the tournament, which has Nigeria’s Super Eagles as one of the 24 participating teams, will kick off on Jan. 9 and end on Feb. 6.

The opening match is between hosts Cameroon and Burkina Faso at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde.

Speaking on the list of match officials, CAF’s Director of Refereeing, Eddy Maillet said: “The match officials were selected based on their experience, skills and current form.”

He disclosed that in recent months, the officials were subjected to several aptitude tests through preparation courses and real competitive matches.

“This is because only the best will officiate at this extraordinary event.”

The CAF official added that the list of officials has two referees from the CONCACAF, the football governing body of North and Central Americas and the Caribbean.

“It is part of our inter-confederation skills exchange programme,” he stated.

Reports state that the woman referee quartet of Salima Mukasanga (Rwanda), Carine Atemzabong (Cameroon), Fatiha Jermoumi (Morocco) and Bouchra Karboubi (Morocco) is on the list.

They were at the 2019 Under-17 AFCON and the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

All the selected match officials will complete their final preparations in Cameroon the week before the opening game.

They will be closely monitored before and during the competition by a team of technical specialists and instructors.

Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage for the first time in over 20 years with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday, as Benfica, French champions Lille and Red Bull Salzburg all qualified for the last 16.

Meanwhile, Chelsea missed out on first place in their group to Juventus after conceding a late equaliser away to Zenit Saint Petersburg, while snow in northern Italy forced the postponement of Atalanta’s decisive game against Villarreal.

Barcelona started the day in second place in Group E but had to win away to Bayern Munich to be sure of going through, otherwise they risked being overtaken by Benfica.

Xavi Hernandez’s side were duly outclassed by an already-qualified Bayern who made it six wins out of six in the group, with Thomas Mueller’s 34th-minute header just crossing the line before Ronald Araujo could clear.

The game was played behind closed doors at the Allianz Arena due to coronavirus restrictions in Bavaria, but that did not handicap Bayern, with Leroy Sane’s powerful strike doubling their lead before the break and then Jamal Musiala making it 3-0 just after the hour.

– ‘A new era’ -The Catalans were knocked out as Benfica beat Dynamo Kiev 2-0 in Lisbon, first-half goals by Roman Yaremchuk and Gilberto seeing them snatch second and a place in next Monday’s draw for the last 16.

“We didn’t compete. This is the Champions League but it is our reality and we have to face up to it,” Xavi told Spanish media.

“We are starting a new era from zero. Our objective is the Champions League, not the Europa League.”

Barcelona, who scored just twice in the group stage, had appeared in the knockout rounds of the Champions League in each of the last 17 seasons, last missing out in 2003-04 when they played in the UEFA Cup after coming sixth in La Liga the previous year.

They last went out of the Champions League in the group stage in 2000/01 when a team featuring a 20-year-old Xavi finished third in their section behind AC Milan and Leeds United.

The five-time European champions will now drop into the Europa League knockout-round play-offs in February.

– Juve pip Chelsea -In contrast Lille are through to the Champions League knockout stages for the first time in 15 years after beating Wolfsburg 3-1 in Germany to top Group G.

Burak Yilmaz gave Lille an early lead and Canadian striker Jonathan David made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute before Angel Gomes got their third. Renato Steffen got a late consolation.

Salzburg, Austrian champions in each of the last eight seasons, also progressed thanks to a 1-0 win over Sevilla, with Noah Okafor scoring the only goal before the Spaniards had Joan Jordan sent off.

It is the first time Salzburg have reached the knockout phase, while Sevilla join the likes of Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League — that may suit them given they have won that trophy or its predecessor the UEFA Cup a record six times, all since 2006.

– Atalanta game postponed -Last season’s winners Chelsea had already qualified for the last 16 and were on course to top Group H as they led 3-2 away to Zenit going into injury time.

But then Magomed Ozdoev’s stunning strike earned Zenit a 3-3 draw, allowing Juventus to snatch first place as Moise Kean’s goal gave them a 1-0 win against Malmo.

Timo Werner had tapped in to put Chelsea ahead in the second minute, but Claudinho and Sardar Azmoun both scored before the break for Zenit.

Romelu Lukaku’s first goal in nearly three months made it 2-2, and Werner’s second of the night looked to have won it for Chelsea before Ozdoev struck.

“My analysis is very clear: our behaviour changes when we have a lead and this is something we never did and we should never do,” said Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, whose team twice squandered an advantage to lose 3-2 at West Ham United last weekend.

Atalanta’s game against Villarreal in Group F was postponed due to snow in Bergamo and was rescheduled for Thursday at 1800 GMT, with the Italians having to win to pip their visitors to second place in the group.

Group winners Manchester United drew 1-1 at home to Young Boys, with Mason Greenwood’s acrobatic effort putting Ralf Rangnick’s side ahead before Fabian Rieder equalised.

Africa doesn’t have quality to win World Cup.

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, says African teams don’t have the quality required to win the World Cup any time soon.

Speaking in an interview with News Central TV, the Eagles coach said the inability of majority of African footballers to play for the big European clubs was a big hindrance to their dream of winning the World Cup.

“We are not ready yet in Africa to win the World Cup for several reasons,” Rohr said.

“The first reason for me is the organisation, general organisation; there are still a lot of problems, for travelling, for preparation of the game specifically. We have not been able to play in Lagos for over 10 years, here there is no tradition.

“France are world champions for the moment, where do their players play? They play in PSG, Bayern Munich and other big clubs. Four of them play for Bayern, Tolisso, Pavard – who scored in the final – Lucas Hernandez and Kingsley Coman. When you have so many players from your country playing in the best clubs, the probability that you have one of the best teams in the world is very big.”

Using the Eagles as an example, the Franco-German said Nigerian players only featured for average teams in Europe. According to him, having one or two players in big teams like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in Liverpool for Senegal and Egypt respectively is not enough.

“What we have in Nigeria for example, we have our players in Fulham, West Brom, not Bayern Munich, not PSG, not Liverpool and not Manchester City, not Barcelona, not Real Madrid, but these other countries have their players there. So, it would be a miracle if we actually win the World Cup.

“It’s not enough to have few players in big clubs, you need at least 15 or 20 players and the French players are at least 30 in big clubs everywhere, so it is easier to choose the high quality than if you only have (Wilfred) Ndidi and (Kelechi) Iheanacho in Leicester City, which is a good club, but we don’t have any player in Chelsea like before.

So, I think we have to wait for this moment to prepare our players so that they can play for big clubs because work is done all year round in the biggest clubs, not in the two weeks we have them together in the national team,” Rohr added.

MESUT OZIL FINALLY COMPLETES MOVE TO TURKISH CLUB FENERBAHCE

Turkish giants, Fenerbahce have officially announced the signing of Mesut Ozil as a free agent after the midfielder terminated his £350,000 a week contract with Arsenal last weekend.

The confirmation finally brings an end to Ozil’s seven-and-a-half-year at Arsenal after he failed to make an appearance for the club since March 2020. The 32-year-old former Germany midfielder has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Turkish side.

Ozil, who joined the Gunners from Real Madrid for £42.4m in 2013, won three FA Cups with Arsenal and scored 44 goals in 254 appearances in all competitions for them.

The former Real Madrid star visited Arsenal’s London Colney training ground last Sunday to say final farewells to his teammates before flying to Istanbul that evening to begin his medicals.

“I’d like to thank the club for this amazing journey over the past seven-and-a-half years,” Ozil said. “The support I have felt from the team and fans during my time here has been truly incredible and something I will always be grateful for. Together we won trophies for the first time in years and created memories that will last a lifetime. The Arsenal fans will forever remain in my heart.”

In a separate message on Twitter, Özil wrote: “As I said, the past few months haven’t been the easiest. Like every player, I want to play every minute of football for my team. In life, however, things don’t always play out how we want or expect them to. But it is important to look for the positives in life and not negatives, which is why I try to live life with no regrets and holding no grudges.”

This comes after the Turkish club’s president Ali Koc asked fans for donation to help fund Mesut Ozil’s £13m salary after his move from Arsenal. He is expected to earn £67,300-a-week or £3.5m-a-year until 2024, which is far lesser than the £350,000-a-week he earned at Arsenal.

AIRCRAFT CARRYING FOOTBALLERS CRASHES AFTER TAKE OFF LEAVING NO SURVIVORS

Four Palmas players and their club president have been killed after their plane crashed on take-off in Brazil on Sunday.

The small aircraft was taking the group to Goiania, around 500 miles away for their Brazilian cup game against Vila Nova on Monday in the Copa Verde.

The pilot of the small plane was also reported to have died as fourth-tier team Palmas said there were no survivors.

The club announced that president Lucas Meira, as well as players Lucas Praxedes, Guilherme Noe, Ranule, and Marcus Molinari, all died including the pilot, named as Wagner.

A statement from Palmas said:
“The plane took off and crashed at the end of the runway at the Tocantinense Aviation Association. We regret to report there are no survivors.”

This is the latest air tragedy to befall Brazilian football in recent years. In 2016, Nineteen Chapecoense players died when a plane taking them to the Copa Sudamericana final in Colombia crashed on a hillside outside Medellin.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Friday announced the appointment of Amina Sani Zangon Daura as its new Head of Women’s Football,

A release from NFF Communication Department made available to 9News Nigeria said Zangon Daura will replace former Head of Women’s Football, Miss Ruth David, who after failure of Super Falcons to pick the 2020 Olympics ticket was moved to Department of Competition on the order of the Minister of Youth Sports, Sunday Dare.

Recruitment firm, Phillips Consulting, noted that during the entire exercise, Daura “demonstrated a strong passion for the development of women’s football from grassroots to elite level” and that “she was able to prove to the panel her capacity for stakeholder management and funding”. She fitted the bill of a Nigerian and a female as stipulated by the NFF for the position.

A UNICEF ambassador, Daura will oversee the development of women’s football across the nation and also provide technical support to the Head Coach, Randy Waldrum. She will be responsible for increasing the participation of women in football at all levels and developing opportunities for women in football with respect to grassroots education, performance and administration.

A total of 11 candidates were interviewed for the position, including 7 Nigerians. There were also an Italian, a Finnish and a Belgian in the final pool from which Amina Daura emerged. Educated in England,

Amina has over 15 years’ experience in women’s football organisation, and last worked for Helping Hands Foundation for Child Education.

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy has reportedly been stolen from the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) headquarters in Cairo.

Former EFA vice-president Ahmed Shobier has issued a remarkable claim that the most coveted title in African football has mysteriously disappeared.

The Egyptian national team achieved unprecedented success between 2006 and 2010 when they lifted the AFCON title three times, thus affording the opportunity to claim the floating trophy permanently.

However, the silverware that was achieved under the guidance of legendary coach Hassan Shehata has seemingly been stolen a decade on.

“The EFA started looking for some trophies as they aim to put them in a notable museum inside the EFA,” Shobier said.

“However, the EFA was surprised to find that the AFCON trophy was lost and decided to open an investigation.

“They were informed by an employee inside the association that it was held by former Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan who refuted this claim. Nobody knows where is the trophy at the time being.”

Captain of Nigeria’s men’s football team to the 2008 Olympic Games in China, Isaac Promise, has died.

The attacking player collapsed and died in his apartment gym in Austin, Texas, United States, on Wednesday night authorities said.

Promise, who was 31 at the time of his death, played for Austin Bold FC in the US lower league.

He scored 79 goals in 11 professional seasons playing for seven different clubs in Turkey.

He spent a season in Saudi Arabia before signing for Austin Bold, where he had three goals in 20 matches this season.

The Nigeria Football Federation and Austin Bold FC confirmed his death via Twitter on Thursday.

During his career, Promise also represented Nigeria at the 2005 World Youth Championship where the team lost to Argentina in the final, and also featured in three matches for the senior national team – Super Eagles.

Baghdad Bounedjah scored the only goal in the match after just 3 mins with a wicked deflection off Senegal defender, Salif Sane that left the keeper looking helplessly.

Although Senegal took the game to their North African opponent with more possession and more chances at goal, Algeria were resolute in defence and protected their slim lead till the final whistle.

Algeria have now ended their 29 years drought with this memorable victory that will stay long in the memories of football fans for a long time.

The stage is set for the final of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations – Africa’s most prestigious football competition. It’s been 5 weeks of riveting football packed with beautiful dribbles, outstanding saves, sensational goals, and elegant team celebrations. Soccer fans all over the world have been thrilled with the gift of some of the best of African football talents on display. For a few teams that competed, it was an opportunity to taste the beauty of the tournament for the first time and blend their team for future exposure. While for many others, it was more than just showing up among the rest, they had eyes for the crown.

The tournament has also been spiced with more dramas and surprises as expected in a high-profile football competition. Debutants like Madagascar had an impressive show as they battled through to the quarter-finals. The host, Egypt were knocked out in mind-blowing style by South Africa, while cup holders, Cameroon were eliminated by eventual third-place winners, Nigeria. No doubt, the 32^nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations has been more fun and interesting.

And now, the much anticipated grand finale is upon us. Two underachievers in Africa football, but arguably strong powerhouses, file up tonight in a battle for supremacy and glory. The Teranga Lions of Senegal, who have never won the AFCON competition, slug it out against 1990 and one-time winners of the competition, Algeria in what would be a contest between the West and the North.

Without a doubt, the hopes of the two competing nations in the finals will rest on the shoulders of Sadio Mane of Senegal and Riyad Mahrez of Algeria. The two stars, who play for giant Premier League clubs – Liverpool and Manchester City respectively, have helped fire their teams into tonight’s showpiece match in Cairo adding to the successful seasons with their respective clubs. Mane won the Champions League with Liverpool, while Algeria’s captain, Mahrez was part of the Manchester City side that completed a domestic treble in England last season.

Senegal, who lost to Algeria in the group stage of this competition, will be without key centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly who is suspended for the final owing to the yellow card he picked up in the semi-finals.

Algeria, however, are the only team that have not lost a game so far in the competition. With stars like Galatasaray’s Sofiane Feghouli, Adlene Guedioura, and the mercurial Riyad Mahrez, Algeria may have some firepower to trouble the Senegalese defence in the final.

Senegal have also had some beautiful moments of brilliance in the competition and they would be hoping to be on their A-game in tonight’s final. If they would stand a chance of victory stars like Ismaila Sarr, Idrissa Gana Gueye, and Sadio Mane would have to come to the party.

As the curtains close on these exciting 5 weeks of scintillating football, the world waits eagerly for who will emerge as the new king of Africa football. Will the Teranga Lions of Senegal snatch their first-ever AFCON trophy, or will the Desert Foxes of Algeria make it their second continental victory? The world awaits.

Super Eagles yesterday beat Tunisia 1-0 in the third place match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to claim bronze medals for the eight times thanks Odion Ighalo’s early goal.

Gernot Rohr made two change from the squad that lost to Algeria in the semi-finals with Francis Uzoho and Ola Aina came in for Daniel Akpeyi and Chidozie Awaziem
Odion Ighalo looks set to win the 32nd edition of the continent prestigious competition Golden Boot after scoring three minutes into the encounter with a cross from Jamilu Collins down the left as the Carthage Eagles keeper Ben Cherifa palmed the ball into Yassine Meriah and that allowed former Watford striker the easy finish.

His goal was his fifth of the tournament, making him the top scorer with a shout for the top scorer accolade.

Ighalo’s tournament was over just before half time after picking up an injury as he left the pitch before the half time whistle blew with Victor Osimhen replacing the Shanghai Greenland Shenhua star.

Tunisia looked for a comeback on 57 minutes, but Badri couldn’t get the better of Uzoho following Chaalali’s assist outside the area. That was to be the last piece of the action for Badri, who vacated his role a minute later for Dijon-based attacking midfielder Naim Sliti.

Whilst lulling their way back in to the contest, injury-plagued the Carthage Eagles’ objective after 67 minutes with Hnid sacrificed for Rami Bedoui.

Nigeria managed to gather pace of the encounter despite the pressure from their counterparts, who attacked vigorously for an equaliser.

The final minutes threw up chances at either end, but neither side were able to seize the moment as the Nigerians grabbed the third spot in the tournament.

The finals of the tournament between Algeria and Senegal will be played on Friday 19th at Cairo International Stadium.

After the disappointing exit of the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the semi-finals of the ongoing African Cup of Nations, many Nigerians might feel uninterested in the resulting third-place match against Tunisia.

The Super Eagles had lost to the Dessert Foxes of Algeria after a devastating last-minute freekick by Riyad Mahrez to hand Algeria a 2-1 victory. Despite starting the tournament in a slow style, the Super Eagles promptly accelerated their performance with wins over defending champions, Cameroon in the round of 16, and South Africa in the quarter-finals. While many would argue that albeit the win, the team still did not perform up to their high standards, coach Gernot Rohr would have been grateful for anything but an exit in the semi-finals.

For Tunisia, Head coach of the team, Alain Giresse has warned that his team would do anything possible to win the third-place match when they face the Super Eagles. The Carthage Eagles of Tunisia head to the game after losing 1-0 to Senegal in a tensed semi-final encounter that stretched into extra time last weekend. Although qualifying from the group stage with three draws, Tunisia would surely want to justify their position above the Super Eagles in the FIFA world ranking when both sides lock horns at the Al Salam Stadium, 8pm on Wednesday night.

The last four meetings between Tunisia and Nigeria in an AFCON tournament ended in four victories for Nigeria while Tunisia last recorded a win in the semi-finals in 2004.

Manchester City sensation, Riyad Mahrez broke the hearts of the Super Eagles and indeed, the whole of Nigeria with a devastating last-minute free-kick to seal the victory for the Desert Foxes in AFCON semi-final clash.

Nigerian defender, William Troost-Ekong had scored an own-goal in the first half of the match to give Algeria an early lead. Nigeria equalised in the 73rd when Odion Ighalo converted a penalty with a cool finish. The game was destined to go into extra time but Riyad Mahrez had other ideas.

Just after 90 minutes, the dangerous winger made a dashing run into Nigeria’s penalty box but was checked by the defence, before the Foxes had a free-kick outside Nigeria’s 18-yard box. Riyad Mahrez stepped up, and with a devastating effort, he curled the ball into the net to claim the victory in the 94th minutes. It was nothing but sheer precision and brilliance from the Algerian talisman.

The victory for Algeria means they will be facing Senegal in the final of the 2019 African Cup of Nations, while Nigeria plays Tunisia for a third-place finish.

The Teranga Lions of Senegal have qualified for the final of the African Cup of Nations after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tunisia in the first semi-final match.

It was a riveting encounter between the two African giants as the game dragged on to extra time after a goalless draw at 90 minutes. Two penalties were awarded to both teams during the game but both failed to score until the first half of extra time when Tunisian defender, Dylan Bronn scored a heartbreaking own-goal to give Senegal that precious victory.

It’s Senegal’s first final in the AFCON competition after 17 years and they have never won the coveted trophy. They will wait to see who wins in the second semi-final between Algeria and Nigeria.

It’s been nothing but sheer footballing spectacle in the ongoing 2019 Total African Cup of Nations. The grit, the shots, the dribbles; sleek passes and devastating goals, the heart-breaking moments, boisterous celebrations; joy of victory and the pain of defeat, have all culminated in a spectacle that would be remembered for many decades. The African continent has come alive with the unity and passion of football, dished out clearly in the African style.

In the past 18 days, 24 teams have been on the battlefield slugging it out for glory in Egypt. In contrast to previous AFCON tournaments, there were a few changes in this year’s showdown. After the group stages 12 teams qualified as first and second from each group, with 4 teams also qualifying as best third placed team, taking the number of total qualified teams to 16.

As with many other international football tournament, the rhythm of the 2019 AFCON started in a little low tune at first, but promptly shot up as the competition progressed. It did not take too long before the ‘big boys’ came into the party and showed why they were tipped as part of the tournament favourites.

However, while the ‘big boys’ danced to the show, a certain debutant in the competition decided to unabashedly join the party in the most spectacular manner. Madagascar, or The Barea as they are fondly called, have been without a doubt the tournament’s surprise package so far. After being paired in the group stage with potential big guns – Nigeria, Guinea, and Burundi – The Barea of Madagascar showed no respect to titles or past glories as they comfortably glided through to finish at top position in the group without losing a game. They maintained the momentum to the round of 16 when they faced Democratic Republic of Congo. As expected, it was not going to be easy in the knockout stage but The Barea showed more determination and class and were rightly rewarded with victory on penalty shoot-outs.

While Africa, and indeed, the rest of the world await more surprises and beautiful footballing display in the quarter finals of the competition, Madagascar would surely have more to prove than just being an ‘underdog’.

Meanwhile, the pairings for the quarter finals have been decided. It promises to be filled with more action as we will see some of the best in the continent lock horns in some fierce but entertaining battles. At the Cairo International stadium on Wednesday, 10^th June, the reawakening of a long term football rivalry will be ignited. It will be a colossal battle as the Super Eagles of Nigeria play Bafana of South Africa.

Teranga Lions of Senegal will slug it out against The Squirrels of Benin, while The Elephants of Ivory Coast battle against the Desert Warriors of Algeria on Thursday. In the last quarter final game, The Barea of Madagascar will hope to continue their fantastic run of form when they trade tackles with the Eagles of Carthage of Tunisia on Thursday.

Egypt FA have sacked coach Javier Aguirre just hours after their disappointing defeat to South Africa in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. President of the Egyptian Football Association, Hany Abo Rida announced the firing of the 69 years old Mexican coach.

Abo Rida also announced his own resignation, calling on his board to step down. He described his resignation as a “moral obligation, although the football association had given the national team full material and moral support”.

In the same vein, Javier Aguirre had also told reporters after their defeat on Saturday that he took sole responsibility but was proud of all of his players. “The game was open and saw many chances. The only difference was that South Africa managed to score,” he said.

Aguirre departs after less than a year in the job but not before setting a unique record by coaching at four different continental championships.

He won the CONCACAF Gold Cup with his native country Mexico in 2009. He also took Mexica to the final of the Copa America and was in charge of Japan four years ago when they went out in the Asian Cup quarter-finals.

The scenes at the Cairo International stadium yesterday would never have been anticipated by the 70,000 Egyptian fans in the stadium.  By the end of 90 minutes in the match between Egypt and South Africa, many Egyptians still felt like it was a dream as they witnessed their home team convincingly knocked out of the 2019 African Cup of Nations. For the South African team, it was undoubtedly their best performance so far in the tournament and they showed that they were more than ready to turn the tides against the host.

Thembinkosi Lorch scored on the 85th minutes after a brilliant counter-attack to give South Africa a stunning 1-0 victory over the Egypt in a pulsating round of 16 clash in Cairo on Saturday. Bafana Bafana started the game brightly with more grit and passion as they created a couple of chances in the first half hour of the game. Mohammed Salah, Egypt’s prominent star player, was kept quiet for most part of the game by the excellent Buhle Mkhwanazi in left back for South Africa. At some point there were noticeable signs of frustration in the Egyptian’s play as he found it difficult to bring his dazzling EPL form into the game.

By the 86^th minutes the Cairo International stadium had gone quiet after three quick South African passes split Egypt’s defence open and Thembinkosi Lorch was able to fire into the net for the only goal that seals the fate of the Pharaohs of Egypt. It was a well-deserved win for South Africa as they were by far the better team.

Elsewhere in Alexandria, Egypt, Super Eagles of Nigeria flew higher above the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. In a 5-goal thriller that saw Alex Iwobi score his first goal in the tournament, the Super Eagles were determined to put on a better show after their disappointing loss to Madagascar in the group stage. A brace from Odion Ighalo and a cool finish from Alex Iwobi gave Nigeria a 3-2 victory to set up a quarter final clash against Bafana-Bafana of South Africa next Wednesday.

In the other round of 16 encounter today, The Barea of Madagascar will face The Leopards of DR Congo, while The Desert Warrior of Algeria will slug it out against Syli National of Guinea.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been handed a huge task if they are to progress to the quarter finals in the ongoing 2019 African Cup of Nations competition against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. The defending champions, Cameroon, who have ex-Dutch midfielder, Clarence Seedorf as their coach, have maintained an impressive performance in the competition so far, although conceding top position to Ghana in the group stage.

The last time these two African football giants met was in the quarter finals of the 2004 edition where goals from Jay Jay Okocha and John Utaka secured a 2-1 victory for the Super Eagles. For Gernot Rohl and his Nigeria team, they would be hoping for a repeat of that game.

Former Cameroon International, Lauren has said that although the Super Eagles did not play to their full potentials in the last 2018 FIFA World Cup, he tips them as one of the favourites to lift the 2019 AFCON trophy. The game will be played on Saturday, 6^th July in Alexandria stadium.

In the other round of 16 pairings, host Egypt will play South Africa, Morocco battles Benin, and Madagascar will be hoping for victory against DR Congo. Other games will see Algeria trade tackles with Guinea, Mali face Ivory Coast, and Ghana will battle Tunisia.

The pairings for the round of 16 matches in the ongoing African Cup of Nations competition is gradually taking shape. After some intense beautiful display in most of the matches in the group stage, we are getting ready for more shocks and excitement when the competition enters its next round.

Unlike previous AFCON tournaments where only eight teams (first and second positions) qualify from four groups and go straight to the quarter finals, this year’s edition has been extended to six groups and provision for four best third place teams, taking the total number of qualified teams to 16. This means there will be a round of 16 stage before the road to the finals.

So far, 12 teams have gained automatic qualification to the next round as first and second positions, and the remaining 4 teams will be decided today after the final round of group games are decided.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria surprisingly finished second in Group B, behind debutants, Madagascar. The Eagles lost 2-0 to The Barea of Madagascar in their last group game which disappointingly left them with six points and in second position. With the Pharaohs of Egypt finishing as winners of Group A, many feared that the host will be the probable opponent of the Super Eagles in the round of 16. However, as it stands, the Eagles are more likely to face a different opponent.

As the 2019 African Cup of Nations continues, Nigerians around the world will be more interested in the performance of the Super Eagles in the tournament. Yesterday, the Eagles secured their place in the quarter finals after a 1-0 victory over the Syli Nationals of Guinea, regardless of their remaining group game. It was their second straight win which placed them top of Group B with 6 points. A better performance by the team after a less impressive game against Burundi last Saturday, the Eagles came out with more intent and desire to win. Coach Gernot Rohr made five changes in the team for the match against Guniea, but more conspicuous, no doubt, was the omission of captain John Obi Mikel.

It was the general consensus among many Nigerian football fans that Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, did not deliver against Burundi. The 32-year-old was required to play in the hole and make runs into the opposition box, which never happened. The only scoring chance he got was straight from a corner kick in the first half. And even though he was largely unmarked when the ball arrived, his header was an abysmal attempt, though it must be added that this has never been Mikel’s strength.

Consequently, in the second half of the game, Mikel was substituted for Ahmed Musa. After Musa’s introduction, many believed the Super Eagles began to play better and were more offensive. Little wonder that Odion Ighalo’s goal in the 78^th minute of the game came afterwards. The big debate now in the Nigerian football society is, considering the last two games of the Eagles where they played better without John Mikel Obi on the pitch, is it a sign that the 88-capped captain of the team should start from the bench in the Eagle’s remaining games of the tournament?

Football enthusiast, Tayo Adetunji, speaking with Premium Times said “I believe Mikel should be dropped for the next game. It is a pleasure to have him in the team for the experience and mentoring.

“However, the nexus of the team should be built around Ndidi and Etebo. The duo is more agile, they are swifter and have eyes for those crispy passes. Since the team is very young and are likely fearless than an older team.

“Mikel has lost some of these attributes due to his growing years. The experience garnered over 13 years playing for the Eagles would be put to better use from the bench, from where he can come on in tactical switches when a strategic substitution is needed,” Adetunji added.

Having secured that important win against Guinea, Nigerians are already looking ahead to the quarter finals game, and possibly beyond. Rohr can decide to play Mikel in the team’s last match in the group against Madagascar where a draw would be good enough to secure top spot, but will he (Rohr) put that much confidence in the captain to start him when the quarter finals begin?

Looking back to the last AFCON competition where the Super Eagles won in 2013, the then captain of the team, Joseph Yobo, started the first match against Burkina Faso and played all 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw, but that was the last time the captain saw 90 minutes. Coach Stephen Keshi dropped Yobo for the second match against Zambia and he brought him in for just two minutes in their must-win group game against Ethiopia.

In the quarter-final against Cote d’Ivoire, Yobo only came on in the 90th minute to help the team see out the 2-1 victory. Against Mali in the semi-final, the Eagles ran out comfortable 4-1 winners, and again, Yobo only came on for the last nine minutes. And in the final game against Burkina Faso which the Eagles won 1-0, the team captain, Joseph Yobo saw three minutes of action.

Although Yobo eventually lifted the trophy for the team as the captain, Coach Stephen Keshi knew his team would play better without the experienced defender. Can we, using this backdrop, justify Mikel Obi’s omission from the team against Guinea and perhaps, in the remaining crucial games of the team if they go all the way? Surely this would be Mikel’s last AFCON competition, so maybe it’ll be a good time to lift the trophy for the Nigeria team.

As the 2019 African Cup of Nations enters its second round of matches, all competing teams would be hoping for nothing short of a win to increase their chances of qualifying for the quarter finals.

In today’s matches, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will be facing a tough test against the Syli National of Guinea. After an unimpressive 1-0 win against Burundi in their first match, the Nigeria team know that a better performance today will help their course to qualify top in Group B. Liverpool Midfielder and Guinea’s star player, Naby Keita, who played for just 28 minutes in their last match against Madagascar, will be fully fit for today’s encounter. It will be a needed boost for the Guineans who also seek for their first win in the tournament.

In the other games of today, The Cranes of Uganda will be hoping to make it two straight wins when they face The Warriors of Zimbabwe in a crucial must-win game for both sides. Uganda are top of Group A after their impressive 2-0 in their first match against DR Congo. A win for them today will secure their spot in the quarter finals before their last game against the host, Egypt.

Elsewhere today, Mohammad Salah and his Egyptian side will also want to make it two wins in a row when they tackle DR Congo. If both Uganda and Egypt can get a win in their games today, then it will be all be settled in Group A.

Meanwhile, our attention will be in the crucial match between Nigeria and Guinea today. The match will be played in the Alexandria Stadium in Alexandria by 3:30pm. So, who will carry the day?

The Defending champions, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, will kick off their AFCON title defence today when they take on Djurtus’ of Guinea-Bissau in a group D clash. The two teams have met three times in previous competitions with Cameroon winning in all occasions. Although the Cameroonians lost their striker, Joël Tagueu who was ruled out of the tournament on Monday with a heart defect, they will be boasted by the presence of in-form Villareal striker, Karl Toko Ekambi, who returns into the squad to partner with newly appointed captain, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. But Porto forward, Vincent Aboubakar will not be in the team due to injury. The match kicks off at 6pm, GMT +1

The Indomitable Lions will also be in safe hands with their number one goalkeeper, Andre Onana who was part of the Ajax team that stunned Real Madrid and Juventus in the Champions League last season.

Guinea-Bissau, on the other hand, will be appearing in only their second African Nations Cup competition, and from all indications, have not looked convincing in their previous matches in preparation for the tournament. They suffered their eighth defeat in 13 matches when they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Angola in a final warm-up match. Hardly ideal preparation for Djurtus’ in their second-ever appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations. Although captained by Slovakia-based midfielder Zezinho, the Djurtus’ will have to put up a miraculous show to inspire any upset against the defending champions.

In the other match of today, Black Stars of Ghana will be hoping to start their ambition of winning a fifth African title with a win against The Squirrels of Benin at the Ismailia Stadium.

The Black Stars last lifted the African Cup of Nations trophy in 1982, but have reached two finals and four other semis in the past six editions. With an experience array of stars in the squad, they look motivated to end their trophy drought this campaign.

For The Squirrels of Benin, they will face a tough battle if they are to progress from the group. Since their last appearance in the competition in 2012, Benin will be hoping for a better outing in the tournament.

The games played yesterday in the ongoing AFCON competition saw the domination of two North African sides against their considerably ‘lesser’ opponents. Although it took an 89^th mins late own-goal from Namibia’s Itamunua Keimuine to give Morocco a deserved win, another North African side, Algeria cruised away to a comfortable 2-0 win in their own game against Kenya.

Morocco started well in their game with the in-form Ajax player of the season, Hakim Ziyech getting all the attention. Namibia, ranked 113^th in FIFA’s world ranking, had a few chances of their own but didn’t really find that cutting edge to break the Moroccan defence and trouble goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou.

Morocco’s midfielder, Nabil Dirar forced Namibia goalkeeper Loydt Kazapua to tip a long-range shot that was looping into the top corner of the net, while Nordin Amrabat went down under a challenge by Danzil Haoseb but saw his appeals for a penalty dismissed. The first half looked a little barren and needed some spark to get the game into life.

In search of a solution, French coach Renard – who previously triumphed with Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015 – introduced Celta Vigo forward Sofiane Boufal in the second half. The new man apparently brought in a marked difference to the Morocco attack.

The former Southampton man almost made an instant impact, forcing Namibia goalkeeper Loydt Kazapua to save low to his right, before firing narrowly wide with 10 minutes remaining.

It all had to wait late when Hakim Ziyech whipped in a dangerous cross into the box from a free-kick, Namibia’s Itamunua Keimuine misjudged the flight of the ball and diverted it into the net, handing Morocco a late win.

In the other games, Algeria were comfortable 2-0 winners over Kenya in a group C clash that saw two-times English Premier League winner, Riyad Mahrez, in the scoresheet. Senegal, without talisman, Sadio Mane, were also worthy winners as they cruised through a 2-0 victory over Tanzania in the other group C game.

Egyptian striker, Mahmoud Trezeguet opened the goal chart in the opening match of the 2019 African Cup of Nations. It was the only goal the hosts, Egypt needed to give them a winning start in their game against The Warriors of Zimbabwe. The game was played in the 70,000 capacity Cairo International Stadium as the Pharaohs of Egypt, buoyed by cheers from their home supporters, hoped to get a clean sweep through their Zimbabwean counterparts.

It was a fast paced game. Zimbabwe’s goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda had a busy start with two saves inside the opening three minutes — both times touching the ball clear of his goal from headed efforts. The attack of Egyptian team, headed by their dreaded talisman, Mohammad Salah mounted continued attack on the Zimbabwean defence. Salah was involved in a slick passing move in the ninth minute that offered Abdallah El Said a chance to score the tournament’s opening goal but again Zimbabwe’s goalkeeper, Sibanda was on ground to prevent the goal.

But it wouldn’t last for long. Trezequet broke the deadlock.The Egyptian striker picked up the ball out wide, did a quick one-two pass with a team mate, and then made a body check to shake off the defence in the penalty box which opened room for himself to fire home a curling shot that gave Sibanda no chance.

It was the perfect start the Egyptian needed and they defended the goal to give them a precious first win in the competition to top Group A.

In the other games that will be played today, The Leopards of D.R Congo will play The Cranes of Uganda, Super Eagles of Nigeria will file up against Burundi Swallows of Burundi, and National Elephants of Guinea trade tackles against The Barea of Madagascar.
