Music legend Akon is facing a major personal change as his wife, Tomeka Thiam, has officially filed for divorce after nearly there decades of marriage.
As reported by People on Saturday, September 13, 2025, court documents filed in Fulton County, Georgia, September 11, 2025, reveal that Thiam’s seeking to dissolve the union on grounds of irreconcilable differences.
The pair, who share one daughter, are approaching what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary in October.
In her petition, Thiam requested Joint legal custody of their daughter, but asked for primary physical custody, with visitation rights granted to the music star.
She listed their date of separation as “TBD”, and they shared one child, a 17-year-old daughter Journey.
Thiam also requested she have physical custody of the teen and Akon, 52, get visitation and requested spousal support, and asked the court not to award the “Smock That” singer any spousal support.
Akon has previously said he believes in polygamy, and in 2022 interview on The Zeze Mills Show, revealed that he has nine children.
“For me, it looks normal because it’s culture for us. We didn’t go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world. See, the flaw that the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account”
Musician Amirror also alleged in 2023 that she was one of the star’s four wives. The global music star and estranged wife Tomeka Thiam married in 1996.
