Chief Mrs. Regina Akume, lawmaker representing Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has publicly appealed to her husband, Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to reaffirm his commitment to Christianity, saying his faith has been central to his life and achievements.
Mrs. Akume made the appeal on Sunday during a wedding reception of their son in Makurdi, Benue State, a gathering that also marked the SGF’s 72nd birthday anniversary.
In a video of her remarks that circulated widely on social media, she prayed for her husband’s long life, good health, and wisdom, and urged him not to ‘abandon Christianity”.
“I pray that the Lord will increase his years, grant him good health of mind and body, and give him clarity in thinking and doing things rights”, Mrs. Akume said.
“He should remember that he is a Christian, and it was Christianity that brought him this far. To drop Christianity now will not be successful. So my advice to him is to come back to Christianity and follow the line of Christ”.
Her comments come amid heightened public interest and discussions following confirmation of Senator Akume’s marriage to Queen Zaynab Ngohemba -George Akume Dajoh, formally married to the Ooni of Ife.
The union, which the SGF’s aides say was formalized over a year ago, only recently became widely known after a family announcement on social media.
A spokesman for Akume clarified that the marriage was a private decision and not a recent development, emphasizing that the SGF’s public duties remain unaffected.
The plea by Mrs. Akume has sparked discussion online and in political circles, with many Nigerians weighing in on faith, leadership and personal life in public office.
Her remarks reflect concern over her husband’s spiritual direction and the role of faith in personal and public life, even as the SGF navigates both family and national responsibilities.
