Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo’s declaration that “if Nigeria had two presidents like President Tinubu, Nigeria would be like America” has drawn mixed reactions across board.
Okpebholo made the comment while pledging 2.5 million votes for the President in the next general election, framing Tinubu’s leadership as the key driver of national transformation.
In analysis, the statement reflects political hyperbole aimed at energising supporters and signalling loyalty to the President.
However, that while strong leadership can accelerate reforms, sustainable progress depends on strengthening institutions, improving governance systems, and addressing structural economic challenges.
The United States’ development is promoted by decades of consistent institution-building, innovation, and rule-of-law reforms, elements that cannot be replicated solely through individual leadership.
“Leadership matters, but achieving US-level development requires sustained investments in infrastructure, education, security, and economic diversification over multiple administrations,” one policy expert told 9News Nigeria.
The governor’s pledge of 2.5 million votes has also been described as more symbolic than practical, given the logistical and electoral realities of voter mobilisation.
Nigeria’s path to US-level development would require a combination of visionary leadership, consistent economic policies, improved governance, and the political will to implement difficult reforms and this is far beyond the tenure of any one president.
