Anambra State Govt To Honour Late Literary Icon Chinua Achebe


The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C-Don Adinuba made the revelation in his office in Awka during a courtesy visit by members of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers.

Education correspondent Theophilus Ukoha reports that Commissioner Adinuba, said the late Professor Chinua Achebe remains one of the greatest gifts to Anambra State and humanity in general.

Mr Adinuba also pointed out that Anambra is blessed with many established poets, including Christopher Okigbo, Chimamanda Adichie and many others, hence the reason the government will always support the creative arts.

He said Governor Obiano knows the value of literary works and Creative Arts which he exemplified in his appointment of erudite writers and renowned poets in his government such as Mr James Eze, his Chief Press Secretary.
Earlier in his speech, the Coordinator, Society of Young Nigerian Writers, Mr Izunna Okafor, said their visit is to notify the Commissioner of their upcoming Chinua Achebe Literary Festival and maiden Memorial Lecture billed for sixteenth of November this year.

Mr Okafor said their aim is to celebrate the Ogidi born literary icon, immortalize him through essays, as they have over one hundred poems to his honour, adding that they are poised to sustain literary works in the state and to discover upcoming writers and the likes of Achebe in the State.

The group, later, presented some of the latest books written in honor of Chinua Achebe to the Anambra State government through the Information Commissioner.

Present during the visit were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment, Mrs Oby Umeadi and Directors in the Ministry.
