Anambra State security officials, in collaboration with law enforcement agents, successfully conducted a raid on a “baby factory” located in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area of the state. As a result of the operation, six pregnant teenagers were rescued from the facility.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike revealed the successful raid while addressing the media. He revealed that the “baby factory,” operating under the name “Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity,” was situated on a road near Tansian University in Umunya.

The Commissioner said that it was during a routine inspection conducted by the state’s Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit, that the discovery of the illicit operation was made. He said that upon requesting to see the doctor on duty to inquire about why the facility was not registered with the government, it was discovered that the medical attendants working at the facility had locked up and fled.

He said the authorities are currently investigating the matter, in order to bring those responsible for running the illegal baby factory to justice. The rescued pregnant girls are being provided with the necessary medical care and support.

This incident highlights the urgent need for increased vigilance and action against such criminal activities. The Anambra State Government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents, particularly vulnerable individuals like pregnant teenagers. Efforts are being made to raise public awareness about the dangers and consequences of engaging in or supporting such illegal operations.

The successful busting of this baby factory serves as a reminder that collective efforts are required to eradicate this heinous crime from our society. The Anambra State Government, along with its security agencies, will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle any such illegal operations and protect the rights and dignity of its citizens.

Obidike said, “Security operatives including OCHA-Brigade, Civil Defence Corps and the Police later assisted the monitoring team in gaining access into the facility.

“When we gained access to the facility, what we saw was shocking. We discovered six underaged pregnant girls, between ages 14, 15, 16, 17 and 21 years, allegedly camped against their wishes.

“We interviewed these girls and they told us that they were being camped by one self-acclaimed doctor, who they identified as Mr Odili Ossai from Delta State, now at large.

“They said when they deliver the babies, the operator of the facility, will sell the babies.

“Five persons have been arrested in connection with the ‘factory’ and the police will carry out further investigation.”

He urged residents to report any illegal activities, malpractices or concerns related to healthcare services in the state.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s administration to stamp out fake and quack hospitals across the state.
