According to Fabrizio Romario, the Italian Federation approach ed Pirlo on Friday over the head coach role for the next four years.

The former manager is now the clear favorite to take over and become the new Italy coach.

Pirlo emerged as the leading candidate after Pep Guardiola turned down Italy’s offer, while Carlos Ancelotti was also unavailable due to his long-term contract with with Brazil, paving way for his return to the Azzurri’s set-up.

The former Juventus manager, who is currently in charge of Dubai United, is expected to leave the UAE club once the deal is formally completed.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup winner is expected to replace Gennaro Gattuso, who stepped down after Italy failed to qualify for the third consecutive FIFA World Cup.

Pirlo’s appointment is seen as the start of a long-term rebuilding project aimed at restoring the Azzurri’s place among football’s elite ahead of UEFA EURO 2028 and 2030 FIFA World Cup.
