Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed legislative backing for the creation of Anioma State, stating that Asaba will be the capital while Warri becomes the capital of new Delta State.
Speaking at the All Progressives Congress, APC South-South Zonal Congress in Asaba, Delta State, Akpabio said the initiative, championed by Ned Nwoko, has continued to received legislative attention and ranks among the priorities of the 10th Senate.
He described the agitation as historically justified, rooted in equity, administrative efficiency, and balanced development.
He said: “Only one new state will be created in Nigeria and it will be Anioma State.
“Asaba will serve as the capital of Anioma State, while Warri will become the new capital of Delta State.
“Anioma will be zoned to the South-East, making it the 6th State in the region.
Akpabio said Warri already a key infrastructure, including an airport, government offices, major oil companies, a seaport, and a stadium.
Governors of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River attended the Congress. Other political leaders and party stakeholders from across the South-South were also at the event.
In November 2025, Senator Ned Nwoko announced that the bid to create Anioma State has gained significant momentum, saying 97 Senators previously signed a document endorsing the move, describing the level of support as unprecedented.
