In the high-stakes arena of Nigerian political chessboarding, where who gets what, when and how is subject to how power is obtained and utilised, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is again at a point where it could break the jinx of never winning the Anambra guber polls despite fielding the best of candidates and possesing a structure which on any given day is capable of giving any party a run for its money.

Since 2010,the party just like Arsenal FC has repeatedly being fixated on winning the EPL season after season, the APC has done same, starting with 2010 where it failed to win the 2010 polls despite massive support for its candidate, Chris Ngige.

The spectacular showing in the 2011 general polls and the merger of the major opposition parties in 2013 then generated a rekindling of hopes, sadly the switching of voter materials meant for Idemili North and South dealt a death blow to the party’s chances, by 2017 certain factors, including clear sabotage denied APC a one way visa to Government House Awka, 2021 was no different and like the Tennyson character we are like this ” gray spirit yearning in desire”, 2025 is yet an opportunity to get things right, for in it are the great stakes in the balance. The APC primaries for the 2025 guber is that opportunity to see the APC flag flying over Government House Awka, as the party prepares towards the conduct of its primaries to elect a flagbearer, the process seems to be crystallizing into a nuanced battle of intellect, influence, and institutional positioning, at the epicenter of this political drama stands Professor Obiora Okonkwo, a figure whose academic pedigree and political acumen have transformed the primary race into a compelling narrative that transcends mere ambition.Typical of all contemporary political systems, that of Anambra is rarely an A to Z battlefield, It is rather a complex tapestry woven with threads of zonal, cultural and denominational dynamics, intellectual and political capitals.

Professor Okonkwo in all these emerges not merely as an aspirant, but as a symbol of the APC’S resurgence, like Zik, Ojukwu and Ezeife, Okonkwo bears the transformative political archetype—the scholar-statesman who brings his intellect and managerial skills to the traditionally volatile world of governance in Anambra. *The Intellectual Advantage* What sets Okonkwo apart is not just his candidacy, but his comprehensive approach to political leadership.

An accomplished academic with deep roots in policy research and development, he represents a departure from the typical Nigerian politician. His background suggests a leadership model predicated on strategic thinking, evidence-based policymaking, and a holistic understanding of governance beyond mere political rhetoric.

Thus the APC primary is fundamentally a contest of narratives. While other candidates predominantly rely on traditional political networks and zonal representation, Okonkwo bears in his aspiration a more sophisticated political proposition.

His aspiration is less about geographical entitlement otherwise known as zoning and more about the uplifting of Anambra State, its institutional capabilities, and sustainable development frameworks likely to position Anambra as an frontline state. The primary’s dynamics reveal the intricate power negotiations within the APC.

Other contenders bring their credentials— alleged established political networks, level of experience, and deep pockets, now while Okonkwo posseses these qualities too, it is majorly Okonkwo’s intellectual capital that provides him a distinctive edge in a political environment like Anambra which is increasingly demanding sophisticated leadership approaches and not the warrant chief style of governing presently experienced.

Professor Okonkwo’s campaign narrative has in its tone a proper understanding of contemporary expectations of Ndi Anambra, whether it is the businessman in Nkwo Nnewi or the market woman in Anekwasumpu. The farmer in Lilu or the civil servant in Awka.

The staff of higher education institutions in Igbariam, Uli, Nsugbe, Umunze, teachers and students. Okonkwo is not merely presenting himself as an aspirant but as one who will bring about the desirables to fruition. His positioning transcends traditional political marketing, offering a vision of leadership that resonates with a growing demographic of both old, young and educated voters. The other candidates in the race are formidable in their own rights.

They bring decades of political experience, established networks, and deep-rooted connections within the party’s infrastructure. However, in an era of rapidly evolving political expectations, traditional approaches are being critically re-examined.This primary is more than a local political contest.

It represents a microcosm of Nigeria’s ongoing polit;ical transformation—a gradual but persistent shift towards more intellectually grounded, strategically oriented leadership models. Professor Okonkwo symbolizes this emerging political consciousness, where academic rigor and practical governance strategies are becoming increasingly valued.

The APC leadership should understand that this primary is not just about selecting a candidate, but about signaling the party’s future direction.

The choice reflects deeper conversations about its philosophy and how such readily sails with the sea of voters, Okonkwo as its candidate would give wind to its sails and help the party navigate the storms of the forthcoming election.

As the primary unfolds, it becomes clear that this is more than a typical political contest.

It is not only a referendum on the type of leadership ndi Anambra seek in an increasingly complex global environment with the APC in Anambra having it as a primary duty to field Professor Obiora Okonkwo who represents that alternative—a candidate who brings more than the average voter expects academic depth, strategic thinking, and a total vision for the development of the state. While the outcome remains uncertain, Okonkwo as an aspirant in the primary has already achieved something significant.

His aspiration has elevated the discourse, demonstrating that the APC in Anambra is a force to reckon with. Okonkwo’s emergence will do further for the party’s chances.

The APC gubernatorial primary is not just about who will be the party’s standard-bearer.

It is about charting a vision for progressive, strategic governance in a state hungry for transformative leadership. *CENTRAL MEDIA GROUP*
