The All Progressives Congress (APC), is reportedly considering the suspension of consensus arrangement for selecting candidates in some states ahead of the 2027 internal primaries.
Party sources say the leadership is reviewing the possibility of adopting direct primaries in states affected by internal disputes, allowing all registered members to vote directly for aspirants and reducing intra-party tensions.
The move comes amid complaints from some party stakeholders who allege that the consensus system has been used to favour certain candidates while sidelining others, thereby undermining fairness in selection process.
According to sources, states with heightened political rivalry may be allowed to adopt direct primaries to ensure transparency, fairness, and to reduce accusations of imposition and manipulation
The party leadership is expected to take a final decision after wide consultations and a review of the political situation across the affected states.
The development has continued to generate debate among members, with many watching closely to see whether the APC will fully abandon or only partially modify the consensus approach ahead of the 2027 elections.
