The All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing attack on former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, questioning his suitability to become Nigeria’s Vice President in the 2027 general elections.
The APC, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, CON, on Sunday, October 4, 2026, also mocked Amaechi over his recent comments concerning the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, particularly his claim that he could not afford medications for her treatment.
The ruling party began its statement by offering prayers for the repose of the deceased, saying, “the soul of Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi continues to rest in perfect peace.”
The party also prayed for the former governor’s well-being, while sarcastically referring to his extensive political career, which included serving as a two-term Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State, two-term Minister of Transportation, and presidential aspirant.
Amaechi is currently the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the APC’s expression of sympathy quickly turned into a sharp political attack, with Morka questioning how a politician who had occupied several high-ranking public offices could allegedly become unable to afford medication for himself and his family after leaving government.
The APC spokesman sarcastically wished that employers in Amaechi’s hometown of Ubima, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, would find him suitable employment that could enable him to earn enough money to provide for himself and his family during retirement.
The party also referenced previous comments attributed to Amaechi in which he reportedly complained that he had become financially constrained after leaving public office and that his wife was now feeding him.
According to the APC, Amaechi’s statements about his financial circumstances amounted to what it described as “uncanny confessions,” which the party said should concern Nigerians ahead of the 2027 election.
The ruling party argued that Amaechi’s reported financial difficulties after leaving public office raised questions about his ability to sustain himself outside government patronage.
“Four decades, Rotimi Amaechi freeloaded at the highest levels of public office,” the APC alleged, accusing the former governor of becoming financially dependent after leaving government.
The party further claimed that Amaechi had enjoyed access to public office for decades and therefore questioned why he would allegedly struggle financially only a few years after leaving government.
In its most direct attack, the APC described Amaechi as a potential “loafer, aimless and irresponsible” person if his inability to earn a living outside public office was not attributable to what it called “some kind of Peter Pan syndrome.”
The party also questioned Amaechi’s presidential and vice-presidential ambitions, arguing that his reported financial struggles contradicted his campaign to occupy another major public office.
The APC alleged that Amaechi was seeking the vice presidency to return to what it described as dependence on public resources and political patronage.
It declared that the presidency should not be regarded as a means of personal financial sustenance, stressing that the office of Vice President should be occupied by someone capable of providing leadership based on competence, responsibility and public service.
“The presidency is not a soup kitchen and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi,” the APC stated.
The party concluded its statement by turning Amaechi’s own reported remarks against him, arguing that his public comments about his financial circumstances had provided ammunition for questions about his readiness for higher office.
“No one can speak more to Rotimi Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of Vice President than Rotimi Amaechi himself,” Morka declared.
The statement comes as political activities intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with opposition parties and the APC increasingly trading accusations over the records, competence and personal circumstances of prominent political figures.
Amaechi’s emergence as the ADC vice-presidential candidate has also placed him at the centre of the emerging opposition coalition’s campaign, particularly in Rivers State and the wider South-South region.
The APC’s latest statement is therefore likely to further heighten the political contest between the ruling party and the opposition as parties begin positioning their candidates and attempting to shape public perception ahead of the 2027 polls.
