Administration and management of the health sector is not a mean task. It involves several activities to keep the lives of patients safe, to protect workers against ill health from their work jurisdictions and offer a healthier society. The case of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital is not different.
Associate Prof. Joseph Ugboaja became the acting Chief Medical Director of NAUTH on 25th January,2021 and this responsibility comes with heavy duties and planning. Being an astute, innovative and pragmatic leader, he has developed a well structured vision, mission and strategic plan to guide his administration toward achieving its objectives.
No wonder he was able to record several infrastructural and administrative developments in the hospital within 2 months of assumption of office.
The hallmark of these achievements is the massive development taking place at the permanent site under his guide leading to the relocation of all the clinics and several hospital units to the permanent site. The infrastructural development ongoing at the permanent site include the completion of the specialty building, massive road construction, redesigning of the hospital entrance, landscaping of the entire site as well as topological mapping and construction of drainage systems.
During this period, the Acting CMD and his team has redesigned the master plan of the hospital and has mapped out areas for Radiology complex, reference laboratory construction, construction of quarters for interns, House officers Residents and other staff. Work is equally going on for the construction of school of nursing, Health information and mortuary sciences. Plan is also underway for the
Hostel construction for the schools.
Other ongoing plans at the permanent site include oxygen plant, cancer center and multi ward complex. The utilities at the permanent site including light and water are also receiving attention. The standard Isolation center and molecular laboratory are nearing completion and all the required equipment and machines are on ground.
At the old site, the upgrading of the Accident and Emergency unit and ICU to a world class structures are ongoing and the Construction and equipping of a new CSSD unit completed.
It is of interest to note that within two months of Associate Prof. Ugboaja’s tenure as acting CMD, the hospital is wearing an entire new look and the mood of the hitherto demoralized staff, upbeat.
In deed the two months of Ass. Prof Ugboaja as acting CMD NAUTH has recorded massive infrastructural developments coupled with innovative administrative procedures leading to the unprecedented and massive improvement in the hospital.
There is no doubt that the acting CMD is committed to lifting the face of NAUTH and establishing a world class hospital in NAUTH.
He has proven his capacity as an administrator cum manager. There is no doubt that the hospital will receive more facelifts as the young medical professional continues in his leadership.
All that he needs is greater support from all the stakeholders in the community as well members of the staff in order to turn NAUTH to a center of medical tourism.
