ASUU strike: Benue State University lecturers abandon class

Indications emerged Monday afternoon that the Benue State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASSU, have joined the ongoing strike action of the union.

Recall that that the National President of the union, Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi, had declared the commencement of the strike on Monday during a meeting of the National Executive Council of ASUU in Abuja.

Ogunyemi said during the strike, there shall be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of the union’s branches across the country.

Following the announcement of the strike action, 9NEWS NIGERIA gathered that lecturers of the Benue-owned university were absent from class on Monday.

A student of the English department told our reporter that there was supposed to be a general test today but it was suspended indefinitely because of the strike.

“Only law and management science departments sat for the test,” the student told this reporter.

Checks around the school also showed that many lecturers, who were privy to the information failed to show up in school today.

Just few months back, lecturers in the state had embarked on indefinite strike over the non-payment of earned allowances, absence of a health insurance scheme, pension plan, appointment of principal officers in the university by the government and delay in the payment of staff salaries, payment of death benefits to its members, among other things.
