The federal government will today, in Abuja meet with Academic Staff Union of Universities, over the ongoing industial action of the union.
The Minister of labour, Chris Ngige had previously met with the leadership of the union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, the national President of ASUU with other members of the union aim to attain negotiation with union but it ended in deadlock, as the union walked of meeting.
However, Chris Ngige declined comment on the outcome of the meeting which lasted about two hours as he refused to speak with reporters.
Ngige had earlier assured the striking lecturers that attention would be paid to three critical demands which included salary shortfalls, university revitalization, and earned allowances of ASUU member.
Consequently, there seems to be no end to the strike which began about six weeks ago and academic activities would remain grounded.
This week’s meeting is a continuation of last week’s meeting with the minister where he (Ngige) was expected to brief the striking lecturers on areas that the Federal Government had agreed to implement from their long list of demands.
Some of the contending issues include poor funding of Nigerian Universities, the alleged plot to increase students’ fees in some institutions, introduction of an education bank and the non-implementation of previous agreements.
