Atiku Pledges Scholarship to Viral Niger Teen Miner After 37 Deaths

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to support the education of Yusuf Aliyu, a teenage artisanal miner from Niger State whose account of conditions at a mining site went viral on social media following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the state.

Atiku, who reacted to the viral video on Sunday, September 20, said he was deeply moved by the young miner’s intelligence, clarity and confidence, describing the circumstances surrounding his life as deeply concerning.

According to the former Vice President, Yusuf should be in a classroom developing his potential rather than working at a mining site in a community endowed with mineral resources but facing poverty and limited access to education.

Atiku said he was prepared to support Yusuf’s education and ensure that his academic potential was not lost because of poverty. Reports on the pledge indicate that the support is intended to take the young man through university and as far as his educational aspirations permit.

The teenager’s video gained widespread attention amid public concern over the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who were arrested during anti-illegal-mining operations in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas of Niger State on September 15 and 16.

The miners subsequently died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The Corps initially attributed the deaths to a suspected disease outbreak, while survivors and other accounts raised concerns about the conditions in which the detainees were held. The exact cause and circumstances of the deaths remain subject to investigation.

Yusuf, in the viral video, reportedly spoke about his experience at the mining site and made allegations concerning the treatment of miners by security personnel. His account has added to the public debate surrounding the incident, although the allegations remain subject to official investigation.

The Federal Government has since ordered an independent investigation into the deaths. The Ministry of Interior constituted a 10-member committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the arrests, detention and deaths of the 37 people, while 20 NSCDC officers were suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Niger State Government has also established a committee of inquiry and ordered investigations and medical examinations aimed at determining the cause of the deaths. The police are separately investigating the incident.

Atiku also called for Yusuf and his family to be protected, stressing that any attempt to contact or assist the teenager should be handled responsibly through his family and appropriate child-protection channels.

The scholarship pledge has therefore emerged against the backdrop of a wider national conversation over poverty, access to education, artisanal mining and the protection of young people in mineral-producing communities, while investigations continue into the deaths of the 37 detainees.
