Attacks On David Umahi : A Manifestation Of Opposition That Comes With Promotion

When Friedrich Nietzsche popularly observed that “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” it isn’t difficult to fathom how commonplace this truth is in the waters of life. Natural and man-made impediments are inevitable. Adaptation, swimming against the tide with tenacity make all the difference. Arguably, nowhere is this dynamics more evident than in politics; and no political journey in Nigeria is this more rampant than in Engr. David Nweze Umahi’s. History says his latest opposition would come with a promotion.

Few days ago, media headlines were awash with news of the purported sack of the executive governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Nweze Umahi (FNSE, FNATE) by a court ruling. He constitutionally remains governor. No psychic is needed to tell it was a botched handiwork of political adversaries who, in biblical parlance, defiantly tried to touch the Lord’s anointed. Beyond that turn of events and attendant technicalities, attention need be drawn to its future import. Most likely, they presage the political ascension of Governor Umahi.

Prior to Engr. Umahi’s emergence as PDP flag bearer in the 2015 gubernatorial election, his ambition was unwelcomed by his principal at the time despite being the deputy governor of Ebonyi State. The enormous powers of an incumbent governor bestow on its holder the privilege of being the state leader of the party. The preference of Governor Umahi’s boss at the time for another candidate and related oppositional moves within the party didn’t deter him. He persisted, becoming Ebonyi State’s number one citizen to date. Like the biblical David, Engr. Umahi rose from opposition to promotion.

Recently, the Uburu-born consummate engineer and politician avowed interest in holding the highest office of president in Nigeria. His unprecedented and unrivaled achievements in governance in the state, particularly in laying down infrastructure today for Ebonyi’s commercial leap tomorrow, for the past seven years is a testament to a visionary leader. A square peg in Nigeria’s square hole. But again, frantic efforts are in the cooking pot to demystify cum ridicule Governor Umahi and hobble his purposeful steps to midwife a better Nigeria. This, too, shall pass away and hopefully culminate in the presidency.

Thus, there is no doubt a resonant track record, sheer optimism, razor-sharp focus and genuine desire to serve, characteristic of his person, would pave the way all the way to Aso Rock come 2023. Stopping by at the presidency is possible and achievable, irrespective of the stratagems of political Sauls. These are familiar waters, arriving safely at the shore is within reach.
