The Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, CP Ajo Ordue, has issued a stern warning to members of the public against offering money or other inducements to police officers in connection with bail, stressing that bail is free across Nigeria
The Police Commissioner gave the warning while addressing concerns surrounding police procedures, alleged extortion and the need for greater transparency in the handling of criminal cases and suspects.
According to CP Ordue, while the police have a responsibility to ensure that suspects are processed in accordance with the law, members of the public must also play their part by refusing to offer financial inducements to officers in an attempt to influence or accelerate official procedures.
He stated that some individuals sometimes put pressure on police personnel by attempting to offer money during the bail process, a practice he said would no longer be tolerated.
“Bail is free across Nigeria. Parties involved sometimes try to pressurise the police, but we are going to arrest anybody who offers a bribe.”
The Commissioner’s statement places responsibility on both police officers and members of the public in the fight against corruption within the criminal justice system.
CP Ordue urged citizens who are asked to pay money in exchange for bail to report such demands through the appropriate channels rather than quietly complying with them.
At the same time, he warned members of the public against attempting to corrupt police officers by offering money or other benefits to secure favourable treatment.
The Commissioner emphasized that the command remains committed to improving professionalism, accountability and public confidence in the police force.
The warning comes amid continuing concerns in Nigeria over allegations of extortion and unofficial payments during police investigations, arrests and bail processes.
CP Ordue therefore called on residents of Cross River State to understand their rights, follow lawful procedures and cooperate with the police without attempting to influence officers financially.
He further stressed that anyone who demands money for bail or attempts to offer a bribe could face appropriate action, reinforcing the need for both police personnel and citizens to uphold the rule of law.
The Cross River State Police Command is expected to continue sensitising the public on lawful police procedures while encouraging citizens to report misconduct by officers.
9NEWS NIGERIA*urges members of the public to know their rights and to report any alleged demand for payment for bail through appropriate police authorities.
