Terrorists, widely referred to as bandits, on Friday launched an attack on commuters along the Danjibga–Kuncin Kalgo Road in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, abducting all passengers and setting two vehicles ablaze.
Sources told Sahara Reporters that the armed men had barricaded the road before carrying out the assault, leaving all the passengers’ whereabouts unknown as of Saturday morning.
According to reports, the assailants seized the occupants of the vehicles before torching the automobiles.
9news Nigeria reports that a local security alert platform, Bakatsine, confirmed the development, warning that the incident further underscores the fragile security situation on major highways in the state.
This latest incident comes just days after security forces conducted a clearance operation on the Gusau–Magami–Dansadau Road, which had previously been hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast on December 27 that killed at least eight persons.
Acting on the orders of the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba, combined teams of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists from the Police and Military had combed the highway, fearing that more explosives could be planted.
The operation was executed under the joint security umbrella of Operation Fansa-Yamma, with armed security personnel providing full coverage for the exercise.
