Benue Police confirms 17 killed when gunmen attacked Sankera community

Benue State Police Authority has confirmed the death of seventeen persons killed by armed herdsmen in Sankera axis of the state after invading the community on Friday morning.

In a statement released by the command Public Relations Officer Catherine Anene, says a team of officers are still engaging the bandits as they retreats into the forest around TARABA axis.

Police says the suspected militia which came in their large number invaded Gbagir in Ukum local government area killed five persons and also went to Logo local government where twelve persons were also killed by the assailants.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Steven Yabanet, had ordered tactical team to move to the area to join force with police officers on ground and security agencies to repel the attackers.

The Commissioner of Police, however, warns social media users that are reporting unconfirmed reports and inciting the general public to desist from such actions that are capable of creating unnecessary tension in the state.

He reiterated his commitment to fight the attackers and encourage the good people of Sankera to continue to cooperate with the police as the operation is ongoing.
