Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor of Borno State, has donated N2.5m to the League of Veterans, a group of veteran journalists.
The veterans are journalists who served in Borno State for several dacades.
Zulum made the donation on Tuesday during the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Borno State Chapter’s 2025 Triennial Delegates’ Conference in the state capital, Maiduguri.
Represented by his spokesman, Dauda Iliya, the governor said that the donation is in recognition of their service to the state.
While speaking, Governor Zulum emphasize on the importance of free speech and press freedom in the development of democracy in Nigeria.
He said that his government will remain steadfast in supporting journalism and journalists’ activities in Borno.
He also urge the members of the press to remain committed to the fight against fake news and misinformation in the state and beyond.
Zulum equally congratulated the newly elected executives of the union and called on them to uphold professional in nurturing journalism in the state.
Also in an interview with the press after the conference, Mr. Iliya announced the state government’s plan to develop the capacity of journalists in Borno.
He said that there is already a working committee who are saddled with the responsibility of training and retraining of media professionals working at state owned media platforms in Borno.
