In a historic move, Borno State is poised to become the first northern state in Nigeria to establish an intra-city rail network.
The state governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has announced plans to construct the railway, which will connect Maiduguri, the state capital, with key surrounding areas.
The project’s initial phase will feature 12 strategically located terminals across Maiduguri, linking major markets, schools and public facilities.
This ambitious infrastructure endeavor is expected to significantly boost economic activity, streamline the movement of goods and people, and enhance overall urban connectivity.
The rail network, designed with future expansion in mind, could eventually extend to other local government areas within the state, further integrating Borno’s economy and reducing transportation bottlenecks.
The potential for increased trade, tourism, and investment is seen as a transformative development for the region, which has faced significant challenges in recent years.
During an inspection of the proposed routes and terminals, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, Borno’s Commissioner for Transport and Energy, emphasized the importance of thorough preparation.
Feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments, and community consultations are already underway to ensure the project’s sustainability and long-term success.
Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), the implementation partner, is collaborating closely with the state government to bring the vision to reality.
If successful, the project will not only set a precedent for other northern states but also position Borno as a pioneering force in modernizing Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure.
This rail network promises to be a game-changer for Borno State, fostering economic growth, improving mobility, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents
