President Muhammadu Buhari is in South Africa on a three-day state visit. The president left Nigeria on Wednesday through the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu in a statement obtained by newsmen had said the visit was at the instance of President Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss the welfare of Nigerians, and enhance the relations between both countries.
Mr Shehu said during his visit, Buhari will hold a town hall meeting with Nigerians in South Africa to reassure them of government’s commitment in protecting their lives and property amidst xenophobic scare.
The President is accompanied on the visit by Governors of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi; his Kano State counterpart, Abdullahi Ganduje; and Simon Lalong of Plateau State; among other top government functionaries.
Already, President Buhari has met his South African counterpart, Ramaphosa. The meeting between both African leaders is the first since the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, which saw many leaving the country.
Speaking during the visit, Buhari, according to a statement by his media aide, told President Ramaphosa that; “My government has taken action to prevent a repeat of retaliatory attacks on South Africa businesses.
We are calling on your administration to do the same with regards to attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa.”
