The Delta State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared an indefinite strike across the state following the reported death of Mr Unity Adedah, a Deputy Director in the State Ministry of Secondary Education.
The NLC Chairman in Delta State, Dr Goodluck Oforbruku, announced the decision on Friday, September 25, 2026, while addressing protesting civil servants at the Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba.
The development followed protests by workers over the circumstances surrounding Adedah’s death. Reports indicate that workers shut down the state secretariat as they demanded answers and accountability for the incident.
According to allegations made by workers and reported by multiple media outlets, Adedah was allegedly tied up and severely beaten by individuals said to be acting on the orders of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu.
However, the allegation that the commissioner ordered the assault has not been independently established, and no official finding of responsibility has been reported. Some reports also indicate that the commissioner has denied ordering anyone to attack the deceased.
The NLC’s indefinite industrial action is expected to affect government activities and public services across Delta State, as organised labour demands clarification of the circumstances surrounding Adedah’s death and accountability for anyone found culpable.
The situation has generated tension among civil servants, with workers calling for a transparent investigation into the events that preceded the deputy director’s death.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Secretary to the Delta State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, visited the protesting workers and appealed for calm, with the state government indicating that the circumstances surrounding the death would be investigated.
The incident remains under scrutiny as workers await further action from the state government and relevant authorities. The outcome of any investigation is expected to establish what transpired and determine responsibility based on verified evidence.
