THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON HEALTH INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA HOLDS PUBLIC HEARING ON BILLS REFERRED: MONDAY, MARCH 08, 2021 – WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 2021.

One of the most fundamental responsibilities of a responsive Parliament globally, is the capacity to respond to challenging circumstances deploying the legislative instrument of law making. And this is done and achieved through the sponsorship of Bills either through Executive Bill(s) or Private Member Bill(s).

The Public Hearing slated for the 8th, 9th and 10th of March, 2021 will focus on the submission of memoranda and other sensitive contributions by certain critical stakeholders on the five sensitive Bills so far refered. This would guide the Committee in the completion of the assignments as referred!

Abuja Nigeria revealed that the Day One of the Public Hearing was declared open by The Hon. Speaker of the House of Representatives, The Right Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila , as ably represented by The Hon. Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives, The Hon. Nkeiru Onyejeocha. And the activity for the day kicked off. The remarks of Mr. Speaker re-echoed and re -emphasized on the importance of health generally as a cumulative part of the 9th Legislative Agenda ; adjudged critical and sensitive.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of the opening remarks by the Chairman , House Committee on Health Institutions in Nigeria, The Hon. Dr Paschal Chigozie Obi who represents the Ideato North / Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State Nigeria, and who for unavoidable circumstances and reasons, was not in attendance, but effectively represented by the Deputy Chairman of the Committee, The Hon. Martin Oke. Excellent delivery, it was thoroughly!

The presence of His Excellency, The Deputy Governor of the Niger State of Nigeria, His Excellency, Ahmed Mohammed Ketso, and the former Governor of the Niger State of Nigeria, His Excellency, Babangida Aliyu Muazu ( Chief Servant ) added unquenchable political glamour to the event as His Excellency came in solidarity with one of the sponsors of the Bills under review.

Further again, the arrival and presence of the Hon. Minister of Health, Dr. Ehamire was a great inspiration and motivation to the stakeholders and contributors. Yet again, Professor Jerry Gana, the Registrar of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board, Professor Oloyede, and Professor Yahaya Kuta ( former Secretary to the Government of the Niger State of Nigeria ) were the Special Guests. And their individual contributions were exceptionally delivered, and acknowledged.

Conclusively, the Day One ceremony centred on two Bills, out of a total of five Bills for the Public Hearing. And the Bills for today include:
a) A Bill for An Act to establish the Federal University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Bida, Niger State for the purpose of providing qualitative education in Medicine and Health Sciences, and for other related matters : ( H.B.411) – Sponsored by The Hon Saidu Musa Abdullahi ( Bida / Gbako / Katcha Federal Constituency.
(b) A Bill for An Act to establish to establish the Nigerian Health Infrastructure Development Bank to enhance and promote the health and well-being of Nigerians; to boost local health care capacity and related matters: ( H.B 908 ) sponsored by The Hon. Mansur Manu Soro ;
Co – sponsored by The Right Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila.

The Technical and Administrative structure and support were provided and delivered by the Clerk of the Committee, Mr. Hakilu Abass and his support staff, and the Legislative Consultants to the Committee, the Dominion and Diamond Konsults led by Temple Okonji Esq ( Managing Partner/Principal Consultant), and Kelechi Nwokeogu Esq ( Legislative Consultant ).
