Speaking with our correspondent, a resident of the area who identified himself as Chief Christopher Ngwuta said the priest, Rev. Fr. Nonso Nwonu escaped being killed during the attack by God’s grace.

He said the attack was carried out because the priest endorsed the candidates of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Professor Benard Odoh.

According to him, “the thugs struck around 4:00a.m before the morning mass. They burnt and destroyed property of the Church”.

“We are suspecting the evil party (APC) as the brain behind the attack because the priest endorsed APGA candidates.”

“Everybody in this community is afraid of mentioning their names because we don’t know their next plans,” he said.

As at the time of filing this report, efforts by our correspondent to get the reaction of APC stakeholders in the community proved abortive.

It would be recalled that Catholic priests and especially the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Professor Peter Nworie had come under attacks and heavy criticism in recent times following their sermons which have condemned the widespread violence that has bedeviled the State in the wake of the 2023 electioneering campaigns in the State.
