Former President Muhammadu Buhari has extended heartfelt congratulations to former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, as he marks his 90th birthday.
In a statement released on October 19, 2024, signed by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Buhari praised Gowon’s visionary leadership and commitment to preserving Nigeria’s unity during one of the most turbulent periods in the country’s history.
Buhari lauded the former leader’s efforts, particularly highlighting Gowon’s role during the Nigerian Civil War and his continued service to the nation even after his time in office.
He commended Gowon’s leadership qualities as a soldier and statesman, describing his contributions to the nation’s progress as invaluable.
“We honor his invaluable contributions to our nation’s continued existence as one, and the progress that has come with that,” Buhari stated.
He added that Gowon’s courage and leadership during challenging times continue to inspire both the older and younger generations of Nigerians.
Buhari also expressed admiration for Gowon’s post-military service, particularly through his work with the “Nigeria Prays” initiative, a project dedicated to fostering peace and unity through national prayers.
