A non- governmental organization, Society for Safe Motherhood SOSAM has called on Federal Government to release adequate grants to NGOs and Civil Liberty Organizations CLOs to aid their services in their respective areas specializations.
This call came from the CEO Dr. Joyce Kalu whose deepest interest is to help build a healthy nation and will in one way or the other through her agency SOSAM help to improve the society and help Nigeria grow speedily.
On a chat with 9News Nigeria, one of the topmost Non- Governmental Organizations SOSAM has maintained that with the help of donor agencies, spirited individuals and government grants, NGOs and CLOs can Improve their services.
Meanwhile, SOSAM, is a registered NGO with CAC registration number (NGO)CAC/IT/NO 39169. It has its aims and objectives to Improve Material Health, ie help in eradicating the increase of Maternal mortality in Nigeria.(2) Reduce Child Mortality. (3) Combat HIV/AIDs, Malaria and other diseases in Nigeria.
SOSAM has collaboration with the National Open University of Nigeria –NOUN to train Nurses.
Besides, Research has proven that Nigeria with a population density of over two hundred and ten million is with only two hundred thousand Nurses.
There is lack of enough skilled Health attendants even in Urban and Rural Areas. Information revealed to 9News Nigeria was that SOSAM has intention to give opportunity to whosoever that has the ambition required and qualifications to Study Nursing without Bias.
SOSAM has affiliation with Global Health to supply us with Scanning machine, medical equipment , like LifeWrap non- Pneumatic Antishock Garment (NASG); it is a lightweight an reusable First Aid Compression Device, used upto 144 times for each unit to treat shock and manage Postpartum and Obstetric Heamorrhage.
Society for Safe Motherhood SOSAM (NGO) started to function as a Corporate Body since the 23rd of June 2010. Since then the NGO has done alot good to the society and saved humanity.
SOSAM has gone through many interventions and recent intervention is on Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is 100 times more infectious than HIV/AIDs; because we now adopt the Western Life style Cancer has reached an Epidemic proportion.
“We create awareness on the Risk factors, prevention–.and Cure of Cancer. Cancer is not Curable with Cytotoxic drugs and Radiotherapy.
“Fortunately there are Vaccines for Hepatitis B and Cervical cancer. There is a total solution for this monster called Cancer which has ravaged and minaced the entire Globe since ages — at all stages from SOSAM.
The CEO of SOSAM, Dr. Joyce Kalu hails from Abia State and a Medical Doctor. Her area of Specialization, is Reproductive and Family Health, Anaesthesia and Pathology. For the love she has to serve the people, she fully delve into Public Health.She has Mphil/PhD in Reproductive and Family Health- Community Medicine.(Public Health) from John Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore Meriland USA. sponsor by Billgate 2005-2007. Recently she works in the University College Hospital Ibadan, Nigeria.
According to her “our passion is to educate, inform and equip every woman and an average Nigerian with requisite knowledge about how to prevent diseases and even tertiary health conditions’
“We engage in Community health interventions to teach and Immunize against diseases which are not taken care of by the Government or inadequately provided for’
“We accept invitations for seminars, health interventions, health fairs in Communities, Churches, Corporate Organizations etc’
She had earlier stated that Inadequacy of Skilled Health attendance especially in the Rural areas is one of the major causes of increased Maternal Mortality in Nigeria.
SOSAM is spread all over the states of the federation having its Nigerian Head office in Portharcourt.
Recently SOSAM has also commenced a free Immunization of Hepatitis B Vaccine for adults and Children at Nguru Mbaise Imo State and hopefully the sensitization is going round the entire states of the federation.
A call in the right direction is to join hands and promote this humanitarian gesture. SOSAM has come to change the narrative.
