Right-back Mathieu Debuchy headed the ball back into the area and Welbeck needed two touches to put it beyond Joe Hart.
The second half was played out at even pace, as the two teams hardly threatened to score more.
On Wednesday, Chelsea host Bournemouth, while Manchester United are away at Bristol City.
