British-Nigerian artist, Chinwe Russell has taken her acclaimed exhibition, 20 Historical Women Who Changed the World, to its latest destination at Bishop Auckland Town Hall, where it will be on display until May.

The exhibition, which celebrates the resilience and achievements of influential women throughout history, was warmly received by attendees during a special event marking International Women’s Day.

Hosted by Lord-Lieutenant of Durham, Susan Snowdon, the county’s first female Lord-Lieutenant, the event featured Chinwe alongside two other distinguished speakers: Professor Azadeh Fatehrad of Teesside University, known for her global contributions to art, and Sarah Price, Head of Locomotion at the Science Museum Group.

Reflecting on the journey of her collection, Chinwe recalled the solitary winter months spent in her studio bringing these historical figures to life.

“My hope has always been that this collection would travel the world, carrying the legacies of these remarkable women far and wide.

“To witness that dream unfolding is truly humbling.” She shared.

The exhibition’s impact continues to inspire, as evidenced by artist Jillian Johnston, who was moved to create five portraits of influential women from Durham in response to Chinwe’s work.

Chinwe expressed gratitude to event organizer Debbie Connell and to the audience for their enthusiastic reception, describing the occasion as “a pleasure and a blessing.”

She also highlighted the invaluable connections made during the event, reinforcing the importance of celebrating women’s contributions to history and society.
