There was chaos in Mowe, in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Tuesday after suspected cult members exchanged gunfire.
Residents were said to have scampered to safety as the gun battle raged for some time.
Policemen from the Mowe division were said to have chased the cult members away.
As of press time, there has not been any report of any casualty.
A source said the cult members were not from the community.
“Nobody knows where they came from. They just used Mowe as their battlefield,” he said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said four suspects had been arrested, adding that the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Iliyasu, had ordered that they be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran.
He said, “They are suspected to be cult members. The police have been able to repel them and four suspects have been arrested. The suspects are currently in custody. The CP has ordered that they be transferred to the SCIID, Eleweran, for discreet investigation.
“Meanwhile, policemen have been deployed in the area to check any attempt by the men to regroup.”
