Dikko, Olopade Mark One Year of Renewed Drive in Nigerian Sports Administration – Woye Adeyemi

The transformation in Nigeria’s sports sector has taken a new dimension as the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Bukola Olopade, marked one year in office — a year many have described as one of renewed energy, reform, and restoration of confidence in Nigerian sports.

It will be recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last year scrapped the Federal Ministry of Sports and reorganised it into the National Sports Commission, a move aimed at unlocking the country’s untapped sporting potential and repositioning the sector for global competitiveness.

Since assuming office, Dikko and Olopade have embarked on wide-ranging reforms and policies that have redefined Nigeria’s sports management framework. Under their leadership, the NSC has prioritised athlete welfare, professional preparation, and long-term development planning.

Speaking on the Commission’s achievements, Olopade highlighted that the era of poor athletes management is over.

“The days of delayed allowances and disorganised training schedules are behind us,” he said. “Training for any competition must now begin at least one year ahead. We are building a system that values preparedness and discipline.”

The Commission also launched the ‘Athletics First’ Initiative, which revived the long-abandoned Elite and Podium Board and introduced the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) category — now officially recognised as the 38th state in the National Sports Festival. The IJA made its debut at the recently concluded Gateway Games in Ogun State, earning praise for inclusion and youth development.

Dikko emphasised that the Commission is also deepening private sector engagement in sports financing and infrastructure development.

“We have successfully attracted corporate participation in rehabilitating stadiums, sponsoring events, and supporting athlete development,” he noted. “The private sector is now an active partner in building Nigeria’s sports economy.”

Through the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE), the Commission aims to contribute 3 per cent to the nation’s GDP and create over three million jobs across the sports value chain. Olopade explained that the initiative seeks to turn sports into a major economic contributor rather than a purely recreational venture.

Infrastructure renewal and modern broadcasting technology have also received attention.

“No broadcast, no sports,” Olopade remarked. “We are currently rehabilitating major stadiums and upgrading OB vans nationwide to ensure sports coverage meets global standards.”

Beyond football, the NSC has broadened support to other sports federations. Dikko disclosed that the Commission played a key role in the appointment of Finance Minister, Wale Edun, as Chairman of the Boxing Federation, while also partnering with Nigeria Customs Service Comptroller-General, Wale Adeniyi, during the African Volleyball Inter-Club Women’s Championship in April 2025.

The Commission’s first year also coincided with Nigeria’s remarkable victories in international competitions — most notably, the Super Falcons’ triumph in Morocco, which reaffirmed the country’s strength in women’s football.

As the NSC celebrates its first anniversary, observers say the renewed momentum under Dikko and Olopade signals a shift toward sustainable sports governance anchored on accountability, innovation, and inclusivity.

While the challenges of infrastructure and funding remain, the Commission’s proactive approach has rekindled hope that Nigeria’s sporting future can indeed become a vibrant contributor to national development.

“This is just the beginning,” Dikko said. “We’re not just building athletes — we’re building a sports economy that works for every Nigerian.”
