Former Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr Dumebi Kachikwu, has urged the Federal Government to adopt a people- centred approach in the implementation of proposed tax reforms.

In a New Year message to Nigerians on Wednesday, Kachikwu said the season traditionally offers an opportunity for reflection, renewed commitments and hope for a better future.

He noted that hope remains essential for national resilience, but warned that many Nigerians were finding it increasingly difficult to remain optimistic amid economic pressures and insecurity.

Kachikwu said recent economic reforms had intensified hardship for ordinary citizens, stressing that many families were struggling to cope with rising living costs.

He acknowledged that the current administration inherited economic challenges requiring urgent action, but argued that the impact of reforms should not overwhelm the citizens they are meant to benefit.

According to him, while tax reforms may be necessary, imposing additional taxes on an already burdened population could worsen economic strain and public discontent.

He expressed concern that such policies could further weaken Nigeria’s middle class, already stretched by high costs of education, healthcare and other essential services.

Kachikwu urged the Federal Government to prioritise care, compassion and targeted support for vulnerable Nigerians in the implementation of reforms.

He said sustainable reforms should balance fiscal needs with social protection and inclusive growth.

Kachikwu added that he had supported some of the administration’s initiatives but would oppose any policy that undermines the livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians.

He urged leaders to ensure that national policies align with the Renewed Hope Agenda and genuinely improve citizens’ welfare.

Kachikwu wished Nigerians a hopeful, peaceful and prosperous new year, while praying for unity and progress in the country.
