The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has charged wealthy individuals in the society to use their wealth in assisting indigent qualified youths to further their studies.
He gave the charge at the 43rd Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (NSHBT), held in Kano on Tuesday.
The Emir said the call was necessary in order to encourage the younger generation, especially those from poor homes, to achieve their aspirations in various fields of studies.
“Education is the bedrock of the socio-economic development and it is the only thing that can transform society,’’ he said.
NAN reports that the Emir was particularly happy that the key note address was delivered by an indigene of Kano State, Dr Abba Zubair, a renowned Professor of Haematology and Director of
Transfusion and Stem Cell Transplant, Mayor Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida , in the US.
The monarch noted that education is the only legacy parents could bequeath to their children and urged all parents to invest towards that direction, for national development.
The Emir, who commended organisers of the meeting for giving Kano the hosting right, donated N1million to the maiden edition of the association’s journal, the Nigerian Haematology Journal.
Earlier, the outgoing National President of the association, Prof Sulaiman Akanmu, said the society remained the major stakeholders in the medical profession related to haematooncology, anaemia in particular, sickle cell anaemia.
“Another area is coagulopathy – both hemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders, as well as issues concerning transfusion and transplantation medicine,” he said.
Akanmu said the association would on behalf of patients continue to parley with government, the National Health Insurance Scheme and the pharmaceutical companies, to negotiate how to make services available and affordable to the population in need of their services.
Also in his remarks, Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, represented by the Director, State Agency for the Control of AIDS, Dr Usman Bashir, said the state government had spent over N5 billion on the provision of facilities at two newly-completed hospitals in Giginyu and Zoo Road, Kano.
