In a scandal that has rocked Equatorial Guinea, Baltasar Ebang Engonga, Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has been detained amid allegations of recording over 400 explicit videos involving married women connected to influential figures across the nation. The revelation unfolded as authorities conducted a surprise investigation into Engonga’s home and office as part of an unrelated fraud inquiry.

During the search, officials discovered a trove of CDs and digital files documenting Engonga’s encounters with women, including the wives of high-profile figures such as the President’s sister, the Director General of Police’s wife, his own brother’s wife, and numerous other government officials’ spouses. According to reports, the recordings were consensual, yet their exposure online has ignited widespread public outrage and condemnation.

Local media outlet Ahora EG first broke the story, characterizing the scandal as unprecedented in the nation’s history. Known by the nickname “Bello,” the 54-year-old economist allegedly orchestrated these encounters both in personal settings and, shockingly, in his official work office. Some clips purportedly show him engaging in intimate activities beneath the national flag—a symbol of unity and pride—raising questions about the ethical standards expected of public servants.

In a statement, the Equatorial Guinean government announced a series of immediate reforms aimed at restoring public trust and reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct within official premises. This includes the suspension of any officials implicated in compromising activities within ministry offices. “Our government remains committed to upholding ethics and public trust,” Vice President Nguema Mangue remarked on social media, adding that those found guilty of abusing public office would be held accountable.

Attorney General Nzang Nguema also weighed in, stressing the legal nuance in the case: although the sexual encounters appeared consensual, the situation underscores the need for victims to feel empowered to report instances of coercion or misconduct. Additionally, he noted health concerns related to the spread of contagious diseases within the wider community as a result of such interactions.

The scandal has sparked a national conversation on the importance of maintaining ethical standards within government ranks, with many citizens calling for greater accountability and transparency in public administration. As Engonga remains in custody pending further investigation, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the fine line between personal conduct and professional integrity, particularly for those holding public office.
