Eric Sekou Chelle, has reportedly become a potential options for Olypique de Marseille after being put forward by intermediaries.
The head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria is in the list of candidates considered to replace Roberto De Zerbi as head coach of Olympique de Marseille, who joined the French club in the summer of 2024, left by mutual consent earlier this week after a run of disappointing results.
Marseille suffered a 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and were eliminated from the Champions League following a 3-0 loss to Club Brugge.
Reports suggest tensions within the squad and mounting pressure from supporters and the club hierarchy contributed to the exit.
Marseille, owned by American businessman Frank McCourt, is reportedly compiling shortlist of potential replacements.
With the position now vacant French and African media reports indicate that Chelle is among the names under consideration.
The 48-year-old Malian-French tactician, who holds dual nationality, has built a growing reputation in African football. Since he was appointed Nigeria’s head coach in January 2025, Chelle has overseen a string run of form with the Super Eagles. He guided the team to a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and remains unbeaten in 18 matches, recording 11 wins and 7 draws.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has reiterated its support for Chelle, especially with key international fixtures on the horizon.
However, potential move to major European club such as Marseille would represent a significant career progression for the coach, who has previously expressed ambitions to manage at the highest level.
