The timetable for the highly anticipated 2026 Area Council Elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has been released, with political parties now set to begin primary elections in earnest by June 2025.
According to the official schedule obtained by 9News Nigeria, the primary elections for chairmanship and councillorship positions will be conducted on Saturday, 21st June 2025.
This follows a rigorous pre-primary process, including membership updates, sale and submission of nomination forms, and aspirant screening.
The timetable, issued by the Directorate of Organization, reveals that the process commenced with the update of party membership registers on May 20, 2025, and closes on May 26, 2025.
The party primaries are slated for Saturday, June 21, 2025. Appeals arising from the primaries will be heard from Monday, June 23 to Wednesday, June 25.
The names of nominated candidates are expected to be submitted to the National Working Committee by Tuesday, August 5.
The final list of candidates will be uploaded to the INEC portal between Thursday, August 7, and Friday, August 8, 2025.
Party campaigns are scheduled to begin officially on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.
The election season will climax with a final rally and campaign close on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
