The Federal Government has announced a nationwide ban on roadblocks for collecting taxes and levies, aiming to end harassment of motorists and traders.
The move is part of broader tax reforms under the Presumptive Tax Regulations and Guidelines signed in Abuja.
Under the new framework: Small businesses with annual turnover below N12 million are exempt from tax.
Other eligible informal businesses will pay a flat 1% tax on turnover, replacing arbitrary roadside collections.
The technology-based systems are encouraged to make payments transparent and efficient.
Olusegun Adesokan, Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), said the reforms are intended to eliminate coercive and fragmented tax practices while expanding the tax base.
Finance Minister Wale Edun added that the changes will make the tax system fairer and more predictable without increase in tax rates.
Authorities say the new rules will be enforced across federal, state, and local governments, with mechanisms to handle complaints.
The government expects the reforms to formalize million of informal businesses, strengthen non-oil revenue, and promote economic inclusion.
