FG Flags Off Benin–Asaba Expressway

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the 125km Benin–Asaba Expressway project.

The landmark infrastructure initiative is fully financed by the private sector under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The expressway, solar-lit superhighway, is being developed in collaboration with Africa Plus Partners and marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s approach to infrastructure financing.

Unlike traditional road projects reliant on federal allocations, this initiative is backed entirely by private investors.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Edo State, the Honourable Minister of Finance & Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, described the project as a breakthrough in sustainable infrastructure funding.

“What you see on the front page of the pamphlet will be delivered—because the cash is there.

“This is not reliant on direct federal funding. Africa Plus Consortium, backed by credible investors, has put forward the full capital commitment under the enabling policies of President Bola Tinubu.” He affirmed.

The initiative backs the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to leverage strategic partnerships to unlock long-term economic value.

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, emphasized the project’s innovative funding model, describing it as a “cashless” approach that ensures efficiency and sustainability.

Representing President Bola Tinubu at the event, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, commended the financing structure, calling it a “legacy project.”

He noted that private-sector confidence in funding such large-scale infrastructure demonstrates trust in the administration’s policies.

Mr. Edun further assured that this model would be replicated nationwide.

“This is just one of many projects that will be delivered week after week, month after month, through sustainable financial frameworks that ensure transparency, efficiency, and speed,” he stated.
