The Federal Government has officially launched the Presidential Food and Nutrition Assistance Programme in Plateau State.
The flag-off ceremony took place on Monday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, marking the commencement of the distribution of essential food and nutrition support to affected populations.
The initiative forms part of a broader presidential intervention designed to provide immediate humanitarian relief while also strengthening long-term resilience among vulnerable communities.
Leading the intervention, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Hon. Dr. Bernard Doro, emphasized the need for a strategic and forward-looking approach to humanitarian assistance in Nigeria.
He was joined at the event by Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, alongside other government officials and stakeholders.
In a joint statement at the ceremony, the leaders emphasized the strategic importance of the programme in addressing the country’s growing humanitarian challenges.
“Humanitarian assistance must not end with one-off distribution. It must serve as a bridge into structured social protection systems and sustainable poverty-exit pathways,” they said.
The Presidential Food and Nutrition Assistance Programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes food security, poverty reduction, and strengthened social protection mechanisms across the country.
Similar programme launches have taken place in other vulnerable states as part of a coordinated national response to rising hunger and malnutrition.
According to officials, the intervention specifically targets households severely affected by recent socio-economic challenges.
The programme will provide essential food items and specialized nutrition support, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.
Government representatives expressed optimism that the initiative will not only cushion the immediate impact of hardship but also help create sustainable pathways out of poverty for many Nigerians.
