The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to provide hourly updates after earth tremors were recorded in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, issued the directive after the NGSA confirmed that Tuesday’s tremors affected several buildings in parts of the capital.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Alake, who is in Washington, D.C., for meetings with American investors on mining partnerships, urged residents to remain calm.

He assured the public that the government was taking all necessary measures to safeguard lives and property.

The minister said security and emergency agencies had already activated precautionary measures and were closely monitoring the affected areas.

He also directed the NGSA to submit hourly situation reports to his office for continuous assessment and any further action required.

The NGSA said its Seismic Monitoring Station in Utako detected the tremor at exactly 11:23 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to the agency, the seismic activity originated about one kilometre below the surface and travelled roughly four kilometres within five seconds.

The NGSA classified the incident as a light seismic event, measuring between I and II on the Mercalli intensity scale, adding that current data showed there was no immediate cause for concern.

However, the agency stressed the need for continued monitoring and public awareness, while the Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to keeping residents informed and responding promptly to any new developments.
